Erbzyy’s Draft Review
Oh lawd what have I gotten myself into?? Going to do a full round 1 review and give people some grades! I have no idea what I’m doing , though, so feel free to sound off in the comments below!
Seattle Super Sonics
1 (1) Chris Paul PG 19 6'1'' 175 B C B B C A
Grade: A+
Extremely happy for my former roommate! He held onto the #1 pick and made the smart decision in taking Chrissy Paul. The ratings are pretty insane already for a 19 year, which are backed up by some phenomenal notes: “He can score inside and from midrange. Handles are good to start. Very good defender and rebounder.” Sounds like the total package. He may struggle a bit with threes, but if he has really good handles to begin with, maybe some of those camps that are typically earmarked for handles on a PG can go to his jump shot and 3-point shot. Regardless, Paul should be the pillar of many winning teams in the future.
Memphis Grizzlies
1 (2) Deron Williams PG 6'3'' 200 21 C+ C+ B C+ C A
Grade: A
Wowzers. Big jump. I do feel bad for Footy. Good guy and he tanked his balls off. But never cross Tank Daddy Flex! Deron is the obvious pick, but I drop down from A+ to A because I think there is a universe out there where Bogut could go #2. I was very ready to have an insane post defense of Bogut and Dwight moving forward. But I got lucky! Deron doesn’t have the starting ratings as Paul, but seems to be a better pure scorer based on his notes. I’m assuming he’ll need some camps to handles as notes were a little down on them, but that’s definitely in the budget for a PG. He’s a little older so I’m hoping for a massive bump in TC to get him to starter quality right away. Otherwise we’re going back to Snow!!!
Boston Celtics
1 (3) Andrew Bogut C 7'0'' 260 21 C+ D C+ B B- A
1 (17) Marcin Gortat C 6'11'' 240 21 C+ C- C- C+ B- B
1 (20) Gerald Green SG 6'6'' 205 19 C B+ C- C C B
Grade: B/B+
A bit of a roller coaster for Brian in his first tank draft. He also got lucky and bumped from #6 to #3, which let him draft future DPOY Andrew Bogut. Great pick. Loved it. To me, Bynum is boom or bust and you want to use that first high pick on a more steady guy. Nothing like tanking and then your guy dies in TC. However! I thought the Gortat pick was extremely meh. His notes literally say limited ceiling! After you lock in that stud muffin with a top pick I would have been looking to take more risks here. I actually would have taken Green with this pick. His notes are good! And he looks like he's already on the verge of A- outside. Sexy for a 19 year old. All in all, not bad, but Gortat is kind of boring.
Atlanta Hawks
1 (4) Andrew Bynum C 7'0'' 285 18 B- C- D+ C B- A
1 (21) Yaroslav Korlolev SF 6'9'' 203 18 C+ C- C- B+ C B
1 (22) Rashad McCants SG 6'4'' 207 21 B- B- C- C D B
Grade: A-
Poor Footy. I’m glad he didn’t fall any further than #4. Bynum is a pretty good prospect! B- inside and rebounding for an 18 year is unheard of around here. If Footy can camp his defense so that he’s not Swiss cheese in the post there could be potential here. I’m a little worried some of these ratings are inflated by jumping based on his notes, but I’m trying to be hopeful for Footy! I really like the later picks. Korlolev looks like an inside version of Bowen (without the $10m contract) and McCants looks like he could be a nice pure scorer off the bench. Not a bad first tank draft for the footman from down under.
Golden State Warriors
1 (5) Danny Granger SF 6'9'' 222 22 B- B- C- B- C B
1 (15) Ian Mahinmi C 6'11'' 262 19 C+ D+ C- B- C+ B
1 (16) Andray Blatche C 6'11'' 235 19 C+ C- D+ B- C+ B
Grade: B-
Manas is in his CY and had a handful of picks to work with this year! Granger was the obvious pick. That part was easy. After that, though, I’m a little confused. The Warriors currently have no bigs on the roster. If Manas is unable to swing a deal (I’m sure he gets something done), he’s going to go into the season with Mahinmi and Blatche playing major minutes. Why wouldn’t you draft the players who have better notes if you need to play it safe? Mahinmi is fine, I guess, but Gortat has the phrase ‘in the short term’ in his notes which leads me to believe he can get major, productive minutes as a rook. Chuck Hayes was also still out there, who also had really good notes. Just a little puzzled by those last two picks given the need to win now.
Chicago Bulls
1 (6) Lou Williams SG 6'1'' 175 19 C+ B+ C C D+ A
Grade: C
Karma comes for us all. Bashed me all season and dropped in the lotto. Better to catch flies with honey, Play! The pick is fine! The Bulls already have like 8 wings so I’m not sure I understand the strategy behind the pick, but the talent is there. I probably would have gone with David Lee to get the immediate gains at PF. I’m wondering if there is a deal in place already for Lou? His notes are good and he should put up buckets, but the lack of defense and rebounding makes him another dime a dozen in a league flooded with wings.
Orlando Magic
1 (7) David Lee PF 6'9'' 245 22 B C C C B B
1 (8) Monta Ellis SG 6'3'' 185 20 B- C C+ C D+ A
1 (9) Amir Johnson C 6'9'' 240 18 C+ C- C- B C+ B
1 (11) Marvin Williams SF 6'8'' 237 19 B- C+ D+ C+ C B
Grade: B+
Some might say it’s hard not to get a high grade when you have 4 picks in the 1st round of the draft, but I thought Trap did a fantastic job of not getting cute with these picks. I could definitely see someone thinking they’re smarter than everyone else and taking a Frye-type prospect with one of these picks, but Trap avoided that… trap! Lee and Amir look like legit prospects. With camps they should be starters, regardless of Amir’s notes. Monta’s notes scare me a little. Handles issue for a SG who doesn’t shoot well, but loves to shoot? Sounds iffy to me. Nate Rob might have been a better pick here, but I like the idea of trying to get Monta into a system that could work. Big Marv doesn’t have any notes, which can be a risk when picking this high, but B-/C+ scoring as a 19 year old? Yes please. Hopefully he’s got some potential to get those bumped up in his first TC. Really like this group of kids.
Indiana Pacers
1 (10) Fran Vazquez PF 6'10'' 240 22 C+ C D C+ C+ A
1 (13) Charlie Villanueva PF 6'11'' 232 21 C+ C+ D+ C C+ A
1 (14) C.J. Miles SF 6'6'' 220 18 C B+ D+ C D+ B
1 (18) Ersan Ilyasova PF 6'9'' 235 18 C+ B- C- C C+ B
Grade: C+
What an interesting class of prospects. I don’t really know what to make of this group. Fran is the biggest question mark in the draft. Spence said he’s ‘boom or bust’, and I gotta be honest, those types of players usually bust! Again, Nate Rob sitting out there at this pick. A little more safe? Maybe. Charlie looks really good though. Has very good notes and should be campable into a serviceable big. Solid value for pick 13. Ersan and CJ look interesting and could be something, but again, if you’re looking for bigs why not target Gortat and Hayes? Just feels like a lot of praying will be involved in getting these guys’ ratings up, which is a dangerous game to play in the first year of a tank. Need to get a rock!
Utah Jazz
1 (12) Nate Robinson PG 5'9'' 180 21 B- C+ C C+ C B
Grade: A
I just think this is really great value at #12. The notes don’t mention any issues. The C in handles is probably not ideal, but a rebounding PG is so valuable. Not to mention he looks to be a very good scorer. It’s possible people slept on him since he was the 2nd last player listed in the notes, or were scared off by his height? Will be very interesting to see what JR can do with him.
New York Knicks
1 (19) Chuck Hayes C 6'6'' 240 22 B- C- D+ C B- B
Grade: A
How does he always do it? Got Manas to give him a pick even though he was over the HC and gets one of the more unique prospects in the draft. The notes read: “Undersized PF that is extremely strong. He scores well inside. Will defend the post admirably but wont block shots.” Yes we all love blocks (except for Jah), but those aren’t the end all, be all. Looks like a mighty mouse ready to explode in TC. Skillz is going to turn this guy into the 3rd best big from this draft and get a haul for him. And we just let it happen.
New Orleans Hornets
1 (23) Marcelo Huertas PG 6'3'' 200 22 C C+ B C+ D+ B
Grade: B
Decent pick is a decent pick. I’m wondering if Pig was hoping Korolev would fall to him as a more win-ready player, but Huertas has that uber-coveted good handles rating as a rookie, so maybe he can help Pigman win a bit? In fact, he has the same handles grade as Paul and Deron - pretty interesting! If he gets a bump to scoring in TC he could be a more than useful backup PG.
Washington Wizards
1 (24) Ronny Turiaf C 6'10'' 249 22 C+ C- D+ B- C+ B
Grade: B+
Getting to the part of the draft where it’s hard to make a bad pick since there’s not much left, but I thought Jah got a steal here. Rare for a guy with notes to drop this low in the draft. Turiaf looks like a sturdy backup in the making. The ratings appear legit too as Spence said he has low athleticism. Couple of camps to the important areas and he could be billed for major minutes as soon as next year.
Portland Trailblazers
1 (25) Raymond Felton PG 6'1'' 205 21 C C+ B- B- D+ B
Grade: A-
Getting a guy like Felton this late has to be a win for Dan. His notes say he’s a marginal starter! And he just went 25th! Big Bass is active and will get this dude his camps and turn him into just that imvho. As long as the handles aren’t unfixable the Blazers just got a super useful player.
Denver Nuggets
1 (26) Channing Frye C 7'0'' 255 22 C A- D+ C+ C+ B
1 (29) Linas Kleiza PF 6'8'' 245 20 C+ C+ D+ C+ C+ B
Grade: B
This feels about right for Frye. One trick pony based on his notes, but should have his uses. Big difference between drafting 7th and 26th. The Klieza pick is superrrr interesting. If there’s any real potential in that B, Covid might be looking at the steal of the draft.
Milwaukee Bucks
1 (27) Martell Webster SF 6'7'' 230 19 C B+ D+ C C B
1 (28) Cenk Akyol PG 6'6'' 195 18 C+ C+ C+ C C C
Grade: C+
I don’t knowwwww. These guys just don’t look that interesting compared to some of the guys left on the board at this point (J. Graham, S. Graham, Bynum, Kleiza). I don’t get the Akyol pick at all. I get he’s only 18 and maybe the C potential is a red herring, but I’m not sold. I hope I’m wrong! Webster looks interesting with the high outside. Only thing saving this from not being a much lower grade.
Let me have it boys!
