Article: BBS Franchise Power Rankings (2000-2004)
Every five years, we are going to tally up the results and provide and update and “franchise power rankings” – a quantitative measure of team success that is not victim to the whims and agendas of a GM Ranking article would be.
But how do we quantify success? Is it regular season wins? Titles? Playoff success? Tough to tell these days. We are going to run with this loose formula:
1 Point for a Regular Season Win
2 Points for a Playoff Win
5 Points for a Playoff Appearance
25 Points for a Finals Appearance
50 Points for a Title
The SURVEY IS ATTACHED!!.
Tier 1 – Champions with Sustained Success
1. Kings 580
2. Knicks 503
3. Nets 419
The Kings are in a tier of their own, having now won 40% of the available championships. Ashes has advanced to the finals 60% of the time. Crazy. The Knicks and Kings have dominated their respective conferences relative to the competition, winning the most regular season games & playoff games, and finishing at the top of every other metric. The Nets are somewhere in between Tier 1 and 2, but Greeme deserves credit for advancing to two finals, even if his current team isn’t great. Maybe his regression will be reflected in the next version.
Tier 2 – Consistently Good
4. Cavaliers 385
5. Clippers 365
6. Heat 327
7. Jazz 320
8. Mavericks 286
Svedda and the Cavs have enjoyed the 3rd most successful run in the regular season and finally delivered in the playoffs this season. The Cavs, Clippers and Heat have all made the playoffs every season – the only other teams on the list to do so besides the Kings and the Knicks. Neither Kobe nor Frangie/Darrell have been able to succeed in the tournament, however. JR and the Jazz would have been at the top of this list after Year 2, but a tank session depresses the ranking of the two-time finalist and one-time winner. The Mavs have had a disproportionate amount of playoff success, even though Habes does not seem to care about his regular season win total.
Tier 3 – Relevant
9. Nuggets 267
10. Spurs 262
11. Pacers 258
12. Hornets 255
13. Lakers 251
14. Wizards 242
15. Pistons 242
16. Trail Blazers 232
17. Celtics 231
18. Grizzlies 215
All of these teams have been more or less fine, but haven’t been able to enjoy consistent, high-level success. Nanz’s Lakers came closest when he assembled a super-team in 2003 and probably had more talent on his roster than any other GM had assembled up to that point. That moment was fleeting, however. Covid has been doing his Habes impersonation by swinging in and out of contention during individual seasons but does it with pieces that have 10% of the value. The Hornets and Pacers have had high-high’s and low-low’s. Jah just almost got to the Finals after spending seasons 1-4 in characteristic mediocrity. Dan and Galo have turned the tide recently. Brian is hanging in there. I originally put Jeff and the Grizzlies in Tier 4, but he won 50+ games three years in a row before this tankfest started.
Tier 4- Less Relevant
19. Raptors 209
20. Bulls 207
21. 76ers 205
22. Timberwolves 201
23. Suns 199
24. Warriors 183
25. Rockets 181
Not a lot of surprises here. These teams haven’t even been a threat and we are a half-decade into this sim thing! The Raptors have been a middling franchise at best. Play and Steve, two GM’s with big mouths (and big hearts!), have been surprising non-factors. Jeb and Andrew have righted the ship a bit and are starting to get things on the right track. Manas is in his CY and Ashan is recovering from an awful start.
Tier 5 – Disaster
26. Bucks 163
27. Magic 159
28. Super Sonics 153
29. Hawks 133
This is what happens when you get CY’d! it looks like all of these four teams are in capable hands. If I were to predict the biggest riser of these four teams in our decade retrospective, I’m taking the Sonics.
