First 10 Draft Prospects for 2001 Draft Revealed!
Earlier today, the noble commissioner of BBS released to the public for the first time 10 of the draftees that will be in the upcoming 2001 draft. These aren't necessarily the 10 best prospects in the draft so we have a good mix of guys to take a look at and dissect where they might be going in the draft.
Gilbert Arenas PG 6'3'' 191 lbs 19 years old
B B C D+ D+ A
Immediately after seeing the B B scoring ratings for Agent zero he jumped to #1 in the draft for me. Starting off with those kind of scoring ratings at 19 and at PG means Arenas will easily become a 25-30 ppg scorer. Especially since his passing will be low which is also another positive for him. But he also comes with his negatives, the glaring one being the D+ defense that will scare off some people from wanting him for sure. Also he might have a bit of a turnover issue early on and his rebounding won't be great but those aren't huge issues since he's a PG. I wouldn't be scared away by the D+ defense because i think he will still be a 1.5 spg guy and his turnovers should settle between 2.5 and 3. I'd easily take him #1 in this draft based off these first ratings reveal.
Projected landing spot: 1st overall
Pau Gasol C 7'0'' 250 lbs 21 years old
B C C C+ C+ A
I'm a big fan of Pau and I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone took him 1st overall over Arenas since he plays a more important position and doesn't really have any weaknesses like Arenas does. Pau would probably be the consensus #1 if not for Arenas insane scoring ratings so to pick up a franchise big man with pick #2 will be great value. Pau can score it in the post, has a nice jumper, blocks shots and can rebound at a high level. He does it all and is everything you want in a big man. Pau easily projects to be a 20, 11, 2 type big with room to grow in to one of the best offensive big men in the league with his array of post moves and budding jump shot. Pau is 21 though so that might be a cause for concern with his potential. But I think he'll be fine just get him all of his camps early. I have Pau right behind Arenas going #2 in the draft.
Projected landing spot: 2nd overall
Joe Johnson SF 6'7'' 240 lbs 20 years old
B- B- C+ C C- A
Joe Johnson the smooth shooting, play making wing out of Arkansas is our first wing we look at and he is very impressive. Johnson is the best wing in the draft and I love his game. He can score it from anywhere on the court and can also run your offense for you at times with his handling and passing ability. Not a great defender or rebounder yet but he will be able to grow in those areas and be good eventually. Without seeing the other draft ratings I'm gonna go ahead and put Johnson going at 3rd overall because I like him that much. All he needs is his scoring camps then let trainin camps do the rest and he should blossom in to one of the best wings in the league within a few years time.
Projected landing spot: 3rd overall
Eddy Curry C 7'0'' 295 lbs 19 years old
B D+ D C C A
This will be a really fun one to watch as most of us have been in a league where Curry became great. Eddy's ceiling as an inside scorer is through the roof but not much to right home about other than that. Curry is a big, strong 7 footer straight out of high school that's extremely raw skill set wise but he's an absolute bully inside the paint and will score points in the right offense right away. He should have a decent jump shot to go along with his inside scoring as well. The C C defense and rebounding ratings are a bit alarming at first and definitely a cause for some concern but Eddy's jumping and quickness ratings should be really low compared to others. He should still be a 1-2 bpg and 10+ rpg guy. Eddy will need help with his rebounding since C is still pretty low even with no athleticism but if he has high potential than I can see 20-25 ppg, 10+ rpg, 1-2 bpg easily from him.
Projected landing spot: 5th-7th overall
Jason Richardson SG 6'6'' 220 lbs 20 years old
B- B- C C D A
Coming up next is the high flying SG out of Mighigan State, Jason Richardson. Richardson has the ideal size and athleticism for a BBS SG and showed a good all around game while at Michigan State. Richardson shot it 40% from 3 at Michigan State and can hang above the rim with the best of them so he provides a unique skill set that should be intriguing to GMs. Richardson's rebounding being a D is a pretty big concern for me since he's a wing but I love the rest of his game. Another slight concern is that it seems like Jason Richardson never really amounts to much in these leagues. Not sure what it is really or if it will matter here depending on how different Spencer made him. But I love him in real life so hopefully this time around he has a good career!
Projected landing spot: 6-8th overall
Tyson Chandler C 7'0'' 240 lbs 19 years old
B- D+ D+ B- C+ A
Tyson Chandler is an extremely athletic and young 7 footer coming in to the draft straight out of high school. Coming out of high school, naturally Chandler will be a little more raw than other bigs but he actually has a really solid base to start with. B- D+ scoring so he has the potential there to grow in to a 15 ppg guy but the B- inside is likely high jumping. I wish there was a lob dunk rating for FBB because Chandler's would be 100. Chandler's jumping ability also gives him a ton of potential on the defensive end as a shot blocker and rebounder. Tyson should get you steals and be a good post defender in time as well. The only thing about him is he's extremely raw and you will definitely have to be patient with him.
Projected landing spot: 4th-6th overall
DeSagana Diop C 7'0'' 300 lbs 19 years old
C D+ D B- C+ A
Diop is one of the most raw players in the draft but his size and potential has some GMs salivating about what he could be in the future. At 7 foot and 300 lbs Diop is extremely strong and shouldn't have much quickness or jumping so those are good things. But Diop is incredibly raw on the offensive end and probably doesn't stand a chance of ever contributing much there, you just want him to not have a turnover problem so he's not a negative on offense. What Diop will be drafted for is his shot blocking. He should be an instant paint clogger and he should be easy to develop if you just focus on his defense and rebounding. I like Diop a lot if he has high potential like he should.
Projected landing spot: Late Lotto
Shane Battier SF 6'8'' 220 lbs 23 years old
C B C- B C- B
Shane Battier was the best player in college basketball this season for Duke winning the Wooden award putting up 20 ppg, 7 rpg, 2+ spg, 2+ bpg. Extremely impressive numbers but Battier has his doubters on whether or not he can carry that success over to the next level. The main concern is Battier's athleticism, he doesn't have great jumping ability or lateral quickness. IQ doesn't really translate to FBB unfortunately but I think he will be a great perimeter defender and should give you a spg and bpg. Rebounding will need to get up to C which it should and scoring will need camping but I actually think Battier can be a nice player as long as his potential isn't terrible. and think he can be a great 3 and D player off the bench. is extremely impressive. Just as long as you aren't expecting too much out of Battier then you should be alright.
Projected landing spot: Late Lotto
Eddie Griffin PF 6'10'' 220 lbs 20 years old
C+ C D B- C+ B
Eddie Griffin is coming off of a huge year at Seton Hall in which he averaged 18 ppg, 11 rpg and 4.4 bpg. Incredibly impressive numbers and if they translated at all to his ratings then I like Eddie a lot. Eddie was also able to stretch the floor as a three point shooter in college as well giving him a lot of versatility at the next level if he can continue to expand his range then he could be a really nice player. Not a great passer and can force bad shots at times but he has a lot to work with. Eddie could be a good C, PF or SF so whoever gets him will have to decide how they want to develop him. If Griffin has any potential and he should since he's only 20 then I can see him being a really good player if camped correctly.
Projected landing spot: Late lotto/Mid First
Kwame Brown C 6'11'' 270 lbs 19 years old
C+ D+ D+ C+ C+ A
And last and probably least, Kwame Brown! Kwame was the #1 overall pick in real life so obviously there is something there that GMs saw and maybe the right GM can harness that and turn Kwame in to a good player this time around in BBS. Having said that, Kwame will have a long way to go as he starts off very raw as you can see. Hard to really get excited about his ratings or predict how he will sim but he's only 19 and will have plenty of chances to improve in TC if he has high potential. I'm not a fan of Kwame at all and don't think he will be a very good player but someone always ends up taking him in the lotto on the off chance he has really high potential.
Projected landing spot: Mid first
