As per usual, sims and trades bring about some interesting discussions and even more interesting hot takes. Today we have Royal Mark and jahallstar in to discuss these hot takes. You know what isn't a hot take? Footy cheated. That being said, let's get to it!
The Heat are the most complete team in BBS
Mark - Cold. I think this is probably true. Stocks in the FC, low turnovers, elite wing scoring, good depth. No holes. He’s got a great squad. Maybe I’m missing someone obvious, but in terms of most “complete”, i.e. checks the most boxes, then it seems like the Heat. Kings still have the best team though.
nybombers3 - COLD. It's tough because teams like the Jazz and even the Bulls are talented throughout. The Heat likely have the most fully developed talent but their biggest issue tends to be the random long injuries that happen.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. They are solid no doubt, however they do have some flaws. They don't have much scoring down low. West has turned into a very good non option type big and Emmet has pretty stats when it comes to blocks and turnovers. Neither will really do much as far as putting the ball in the bucket though. Adkins has played better this year at PG, however I'm not sold on him all that much either. Their wing scoring is amazing with Finley and Houston. Averaged out though rebounding is really weak on the wings. They for sure are one of the 5 or 6 teams that come out of the east. I just think they have some holes that prevent them from being the most complete.
After all these trades, the Knicks should be the favorites in the East
Mark - N/A. I’m not spending any time thinking about this question because he’s going to have an entirely new team by the time this is posted tomorrow.
nybombers3 - HOT TAKE - Last I saw they had RJ, Gil, Marty and idk what else. Either way, I think the Cavs will take it.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. They are not the favored right now. They have some moveable pieces though after the Pistons trade so you never know what is coming next. VC is going to have to average about 28+ ppg for them as they are currently constructed. They do have one of the best defensive backcourts in the league now which could cause an outside focused league fits.
Yao Ming is the most valuable 25 and under big in the league
Mark - Hot take. It’s Chris Bosh. Yao is really good, and he’s in the conversation (along with Dwight, Al Jeff, probably someone else that I’m forgetting), but Bosh is only 21, has developed like you’d expect a franchise piece to develop, and should have quite a bit of potential left. 4.3:1.4 stocks/TO ratio. Looks like his blocks have taken the leap. He’s nasty. Wish I had him…
nybombers3 - HOT TAKE - Bosh should be number 1. I think Yao is right behind him with names like Bynum, Al Jeff and Dwight coming up to take their place.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. Ehh I have to go with Chris Bosh here. He is younger and I think he might already be better. Yao is a better rebounder, however Bosh is pretty much better at everything else. He blocks more, I think he has more scoring upside, he turns it over less. I think by next year Bosh will remove any doubt and be the most valuable young big in the league.
The Grizzlies were the biggest loser in the big 4 team trade
Mark - Hot take. He took way too much shit for a deal that I initially thought was a no brainer for him. IMO the boards are fluid with their value opinions depending on who is making the trades. But anyway, Jeff’s problem right now is he needs to monetize his assets to win 42, but it really shouldn’t be that hard. Dwight is amazing. I think he’s going to be a totally dominant player. But I also think that it’s a hell of a lot easier to piece your squad together when you have extra assets. Deron for a piece, Granger for a piece, Iggy (who is actually pretty good already and still likely has potential… hate has gone way too far), and his current pick. He will be fine. The top 10 piece for Dwight wasn’t there for whatever reason (I think), so I have no problem with Iggy and Granger. That trade was great for everyone. Hats off to the whoever put it all together and sold every fucking one of you on it!
nybombers3 - HOT TAKE - I think every team accomplished what it needed/wanted to overall. I was never a big Dwight fan and maybe in this sim he'll look better but I feel like he's always a good shot blocker/rebounder with sub par scoring and turnovers. Dwight does look pretty solid but the Grizz were able to remain young and pickup pieces they can use for their CY next year.
jahallstar - NOT HOT. I guess I would say yes. I don't think there were any huge losers here though. Granger looks like he could be nice but he has to get that shooting % up. Iggy is solid. Vastly over-rated but still very solid. He is not a superstar. Dwight can become a superstar. I'm not sure how much value Grant has on that contract. He can score and board but isn't the most important thing for a big their defense? Denver got their picks so they can get to their CY in peace . The Sonics got Dwight to pair with CP3. The Bucks got extra pieces to go for the hope someone breaks out route.
Both Yao and Dwight were horribly misused by their prior GM’s
Mark - Hot take. Were they playing shooting guard or something? Maybe I’m ignorant, because I definitely wasn’t paying attention to Steve or Jeff’s DCs, but I find it hard to believe they were doing anything so egregious that we should call them horribly misused. Actually maybe Jeff fucked up Dwight… he is so good…
nybombers3 - HOT TAKE - It's hard to judge misuse unless it's something completely blatent. I haven't been here that long but I never saw that. That being said, failing to put talent around them does waste away having said player to begin with.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. This isn't really a big man era in the league. Ming seemed to regress from his rookie year. His blocks went up, however the rest of his game really didn't. It seems a lot of the young bigs entering the league are the same. In general post defense around the league seems better than outside D. A lot of the impact youngsters have been wings that put up tons of points. The big men that have made an impact seem to be more of the good non option role player types. Yao and Dwight both would have looked great if they were considered in this category. Being former #1 picks their prodocution has been frowned upon though. I'm not so sure it is mis-use by former GMs, I think it is more of a lower expectations thing.
The Warriors issues are DC based and not roster based
Mark - Lukewarm take. It’s both. The initial DC was idiotic but he found a reasonable one right after that. The Toine trade was terrible. That’s why you don’t jump at tier 3 vets a week early. That player was always going to be there, whether it was Toine or someone else. But then when the actual elite pieces (Nash) became available, Toine became a bad fit. Get the supplementary pieces last, get the studs first. I think he’s going to make it though.
nybombers3 - HOT TAKE - The Warriors just need more (better) depth, especially up front. They did get Theo which should help. I wish they could've found a way to keep Ernest while getting Theo but I get it. I also don't think Walker is a great fit for them and after they hopefully make it should look to dump him ASAP.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. I think the main reason why the Warriors are going to be down to the wire for CY is becuase of their perimeter defense and rebounding. They have the worst perimeter D in the league and are getting outrebounded. When other teams come in and shoot 46% from 3 on you then you are going to struggle to win games. It is all nice and pretty to go get some elite offensive players , but when none of them can stop the other team it is hard to win. Yes he did have some DC deficencies early by not going outside.
This is the most unique draft thus far
Mark - Cold. I wasn’t here for the early drafts, but I bet this is the most unique. It’s a really fun draft and it’s deep too. I think everyone is going to have different boards. No stars (maybe Roy?) on paper, but there will be stars.
nybombers3 - COLD TAKE - I mean this is my 2nd draft here. I've tried to look back at past stuff and I think one of the big things that stand out is the lack of star power on this one. Yes, you have Roy but nobody is going to call him a franchise savior right now. In a draft like that, uniqueness can carry it and that's what I feel will happen here. Lior and Rondo alone make it a pretty interesting draft to look back to.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. I still have to go with the 2003 draft as the most unique. I mean you had two players that were not listed as PGs that can play PG. This draft does have some really interesting players though. Some older super developed guys and an A+ handles SF is always out of the norm!
Brandon Roy and LeMarcus Aldridge should go 1 and 2 in the draft
Mark - Cold. I haven’t dug into it, but I assume Roy is 1 on my board, LMA 2. Really hoping Roy is a monster. Love that guy.
nybombers3 - COLD TAKE - I think when it's all said and done, they go 1 and 2. Maybe PJ's notes carry him up or someone really likes Rondo's uniquness but for now I see them going 1 and 2.
jahallstar - NOT HOT. I tend to agree here. I think Roy there is no question about. I mean his last name says it all when it comes to awards next season. #2 overall could go a couple different ways though. I think ultimatley it will be Aldridge, but you can't discount what Rondo, Tucker , Gay etc can show when their draft combine notes come out. It could depend on team need to, that is however going in LMA's favor.
The Clippers are the most underrated team in the West
Royal - They have no GM. Next Question. #FreeLums
Mark - Hmmm. Had never thought about it. I guess not a hot take, but the team also has no upside and no chance of making any noise. But they are 20-12 and no one cares about them. It’s hard to be underrated though when they obviously need to be blown up. Hopefully Outlawz is active enough to do it. I know he’s had some family issues, and obviously we all hope everything is good on that front, but I do worry that even in a normalized state he’s going to struggle to be as active as necessary to truly excel. We’ll see.
nybombers3 - COLD TAKE - The Clippers have some solid talent. I don't see why they can't make some noise in the playoffs. Although their schedule lately has been pretty easy, they have put together some good wins and they should be able to compete. They also don't get spoken about at all so, yeah. Underrated.
jahallstar - NOT HOT. I guess I can get behind that. They do have the 3rd best record in the conference and are pretty much just an afterthought in the league at this point as they keep rolling through playoff losses and GMs equally as fast. They are going to be in big trouble with the hardcap next year assuming DD gets the max. As for this year though, If they could upgrade their F's a little to better role players they might have a chance.
The 76ers are the most dangerous lower seed in either conference
Mark - Super hot take because the Heat are totally loaded and he’s the 8 seed in the East. Also Skillz fucked everything up because I have no idea who is on anyone’s team. Steve has Chauncey now? 76ers look good. But Heat are the most dangerous.
nybombers3 - Billups will make the 76ers a tough out but the Heat are down there. In the West, depending on how things go with the Theo, the Warriors may be able to annoy a higher seed. A player like Nash can always be a problem in the playoffs.
jahallstar - HOT TAKE. I mean the 76ers have Billups. He can carry them for a few round no question. I find it difficult to say they are the most dangerous low seed in the east though when others are saying the Heat could be the team to beat and they are in fact the lowest seed in the East. The 76ers are dangerous, I just don't see a deep run without even a legit #2 option on their roster.
BONUS: Give me a hot take on a team in your division
Mark - The Sonics are going to win a title by 2010. Cop out! Chose my own squad. You didn’t specify.
nybombers3 - By next year the Chicago Bulls will represent the East in the finals
jahallstar - The Knicks have the best defensive backcourt in the league
At least one of the Magic / Nets / Celtics will be CY'd before they make the playoffs again.
