05’ Trade Deadline/Frenzy Recap
The 05' deadline is now past us - let's a took look what clubs did and didn't do in a milder deadline than those in the past...The Knicks once again stole the trade spotlight during the frenzy with 8 (!) trades in an equitable split between conferences (4 with West clubs/4 with East squads). The final haul after those 8 swaps? Big men David West/Ronny Turiaf, Wings Glenn Robinson and Richard Jefferson and guards Roger Mason, Chuck Atkins and Zoran Planinic plus a plethora of 1sts (Blazers 06, Hornets 07, Hornets 08, Bulls 07, Mavs 06 and Wizards 06). Oh and NYK still in East contention currently sitting at the 5th seed…Memphis shocked a number across the league with some of their moves with their upcoming CY next season. Erbes’ squad dealt former #2 pick Deron Williams along with Brian Grant (to be traded back) for pending sharp shooting free agent Arvydas Macijauskas and effective but overpaid point guard Jason Williams. Additionally, they dealt a pick alongside Zydrunas Illgasukas for forward Chris Webber and have an off-season deal lined up for controversial former #2 pick Andre Iguodala and 2 1sts for Jermaine O’Neal. Here’s hoping the moves work out for Memphis but the West should be even stronger next season with only a few teams planning to tank…The NJ Nets started making some moves towards contention by dealing for big man Jerome Moiso for 2 late 1sts, Mikael Pietrus and Danny Fortson. Going into the last sim, New Jersey is currently projected as the #2 pick behind Atlanta and is looking for some lotto luck to jump to #1 and select expected top choice, University of Washington's stud guard Brandon Roy…The Lakers appeared to take one step back then one step forward after their Ricky Davis deadline moves. Pretty Ricky lasted 1 sim in LA after being dealt for Dwyane Wade, Andrei Kirilenko, Khalid El-Amin and LAL 08 1st. Shedding the KEA contract was huge but having to add a future 1st was rough. They then rebounded a bit adding young big Eddie Griffin and scoring machine Carmelo Anthony from Chicago in exchange for Davis’ the #3 scoring leader in the league. They also tip-toed around the HC for a 2nd time this season…Staying out West, did the Mavs land a sneaky good future 1st in the San Antonio 08’ in exchange for Memo Okur? Analysts around the league think it’s possible as the 08' class should be loaded with talent at the top and the Spurs have an aging Alonzo Mourning and a number of large contracts hitting their peaks near 08’ and beyond. It will be interesting to see if John hits the reset button for rebuild and deals Tracy McGrady for his pick and other assets back in a season or two…Is Baron Davis the best choice for most improved player of the year this season? The former UCLA guard leads the league in assists (11.6) and is averaging career highs in points (18.4), minutes played (38.0) and free throw percentage (78%). Just a couple seasons ago, Davis, the former #14 pick in the Creation draft had very little value on a Suns young roster but now after landing in LA after the frenzy deal with the Mavs, he might back home for good…The “Big Easy” Hornets quietly had themselves an effective deadline orchestrating two moves with the Grizz and Knicks. They picked up guard Devin Harris along with Ricky Sanchez, Antoine Wright and the Utah 06' 1st. They also rid themselves of C-Webb’s long term contract opting for a younger and 1 year term with Big Z. As the Hornets’ finally reach a healthy squad going into the playoffs, it will be interesting to see how they perform as eyes will be on 33 year old small forward Grant Hill to help shoulder the scoring load aside from Allen Iverson and Harris…Are the Jazz and Kings on a collision course towards the Western Conference finals? Both teams m mostly stood pat at the deadline both opting with their current rosters to compete in the post-season (Jazz added guard Steve Blake*). The Kings are already past 60 wins with 7 left to play while the Jazz are 5 games up on the Mavs with 7 games also left to play. LeBron James is having a stellar season in his 1st full year at PG averaging almost a triple double (30 PPG, 9.6 APG, 8.8 RPG, 2.1 SPG) and a serious contender for MVP this season. The Kings 2-time BBS champ and guard Kobe Bryant’s scoring is down a bit this season compared to last year but has been getting plenty of support from underrated point guards Milos Vujanic and Carlos Arroyo at point guard this season. It should be interesting bout between both clubs for a ticket to the Finals on the line…
