Well the always controversial GM rankings are back! Usually a staple of Royal at the beginning of the season, since the Nuggets GM has left the GM Rankings for greener pastures in the podcast world we have been devoid of the GM rankings! Alas! Since Monta Ellis needs to be pumped up with AC's we are back again. Let us begin! Note: Contract Year records not updated past 2004. WTF CY ADMIN!
Extra Note: In case you were wondering if I was secretly Trapstar because I italicized my first note, you were mistaken.
Our Champions
1. Ashes - Sacramento Kings
I think this one is quite easy for me right now to be honest. One might say that Ashes was at a complete advantage with having the first overall pick with Kobe Bryant in the Creation Draft, but I won't take that away from him. I did a forensic analysis of his trades over the span of BBS and didn't find really any egregiously holes in any of the moves he made. Ladies and Gentleman, 6 playoffs with 4 finals and 2 rings gets you the top of the list. A .720 win percentage is pretty crazy as well.
2. Skillz - New York Knicks
If I had one knock on Skillz, it would be that sometimes I feel like he is a mad chemist in a labratory just trading guys consistently without any plan to create continuity with his teams. However, he has found a way to make the playoffs every year in the league and I believe has had over 50 wins in each of those seasons. Knicks picks in the league have no value at this point as evident of Steves trade the other day to clear a 8 million dollar contract of his roster. I think this is a clear cut number two and someone who is meticulously analyzes each move he makes.
3. Svedda - Cleveland Cavaliers
Two finals and now a recent championship, Svedda has operated in a matter completley opposite of a Skillz and more in line with an Ashes in order to reach the playoffs 6 times thus far. He has made very few trades in the last several years but they have been impactful ones. My theory in my matchups with the Cavs has been that since he has relatively stayed the same over the last several years that I should of found some type of lineup/DC to beat the Cavs in the playoffs.....which I was unable to do. I threw the kitchen sink at the Cavs (Very Slow, Inside) to try to find and edge and was unable to do so. One fun fact about Svedda, in recent days he's not a fucking curmudgeon on the boards all the time.....which is a breath of fresh air.
4. JR - Utah Jazz
People might knock this one here since JR has made the playoffs only 3 years. People might knock this one since JR has been one of the luckiest GM's in both FA and the Draft thus far in the league. I hate to break it to you, luck is part of success in this league. He has created competitive teams in the beginning and has a beautiful rebuild going right now with the Jazz. The guy has show he is very capable in a myriad of ways to create succesful teams thus far in the league. I think his future is extremley bright and he should be on the top of the West for the foreseeable future......until his luck runs dry and LeBron signs with the Hornets.
5. Greeme - New Jersey Nets
Greeme is strictly this high because of the lone championship he won. I am not sure I would have him in my top 10 (I think it’s close though) if we were doing these GM Rankings over the last three years or so. However, championships are key and mean the most to me (my trophy cabinet is empty by the way) and I would be remiss if I didn't give Greeme the respect he is due. I am not really sure what he is trying to do with this team he has currently. West is solid. Moiso is solid. Allen looks really nice. Is that going to make the playoffs? Is that team going to be terrible enough to tank to get a franchise superstar player you need to win. I am not sure, but I am looking forward to the future.
6-7
6. Kobe - Miami Heat
This is where it gets a little dicey here because 6 and 7 are arguably interchangeable for me. However I can't look past Kobe's 6 playoff appearances and relatively strong performance thus far in this version of BBS. He is entering a rebuild now and has done a very strong job in the 1 day or so he decided to rebuild his team. We will see what the future lies for him moving forward but I only expect big things in the next upcoming seasons. He’s another fucking curmudgeon like Svedda. Lighten up dude.
7. Mark - Seattle Sonics
I think this might be the most controversial ratings that we have seen thus far in the GM Rankings. Mark hasn't even been to the playoffs yet! But this is a GM Rankings and not a Team Rankings and I do whatever the fuck I want because it's my article. I think Mark has done an A+ job with how he took the Sonics from a cellar dwelling team caught in the weeds of shit and has built one of the best young rosters around. He has acquired not only assets, but more importantly the right assets. This team is prime to be competing with the top of the West for years either this season or next season and it should be exciting to watch. Note: This fucking guy just signed Haslem as I was writing this.
Here We Are! How do we take the next step forward?
8. Habes - Dallas Mavericks
I think Habes slides in at 8, I think we can move these guys up and down subjectively without much animosity from the rest of the league. Habes has a final apperance which is key here. Also, the league seems to unanimously echo how good he is with his offers. I concur. However, there's only 1 50 win season? (2005 not updated in CY WTF guys!) and it seems like all the wheelin' and dealin' he doesn't really matriculate into teams that you are really scared about facing in the playoffs. I think it has been unfortunate for him that Dwayne Wade hasn't really developed into the player we would all think he would be at this point so hopefully the tide turns. However, he is a keen student of the game and I have full faith he is going to figure out how to get to a 55-60 win team sooner rather than later.
9. Play - Chicago Bulls
The 40 time BBS champion from back when I couldn't grow any hair on my balls, here comes ferocious Play! When Play doesn't moonlight as a jackass annoying Spencer about draft files he actually is a pretty solid GM with a pretty good squad right now. I wish he could find more minutes for Lou Williams because he looks absolutely awesome. Winning percentage maybe not ideal for a guy at the 9 spot but tanking in order to make your team stronger shouldn't be a huge indicator of ranking. Should be a solid competitor for years to come.
10. DB - Portland Trailblazers
Blaaaaaaaaaaaazas! Dan comes in at the 10 spot eventhough he is a jackass in my trade threads. Dan has silently created a very good team over the course of BBS thus far. Is it a championship contender, I don't feel that way right now but I think he is a move away potentially from going that way. I am not really a big Eddy Curry guy so I would look to dish him if he can. Dan and I really don't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things BBS wise......however after 4 years of tanking he's about to come into the realm of some of his older guys (Looking at Raef) potentially becoming very hard to move for value. VC should be a welcome edition to the team.
11. Galo -Los Angeles Clippers Detroit Pistons
I won't lie I always look at the Clippers when I am trying to deal with Galo. I won't lie again, I think Galo overvalues his players more than any other GM in the league. 3rd time where I won't lie.....I didn't think it was possible for him after the Duncan trade to pull anyone as good as Arenas onto the squad. 4th time where I won't lie.....I thought he had a lot less success than he has thus far when I looked at Historical Team Performance.
Galo's somewhat of a mystery to me, but he has been with FBB for a long time. Don't think this squad is a contender but he has made chicken salad out of chicken shit with the rest of the assets he had after the Duncan deal. I would like for him to explore a deal for Duncan now at 30 YO but I think he is going to ask for a king’s ransom. Pig Note: Guy deals Sheed for AK pretty much as I write this.
12. Sargo - Indiana Pacers
I like how Sargo maneuvers and manages his team. The problem is that Sargo's teams haven't really won at a clip yet that I think justifies anything behind 12. He has a very solid team right now moving forward that I am looking forward to see if does any damage. Villanueva looks solid. Smith looks Solid. Ben is the best big arguably in BBS. Zo and that gigantic contract are in tune. Stay tuned and keep on lock with this team.
Some people might question Sargo at this spot, I think it’s probably the right spot for him though.
13. Nanz - Los Angeles Lakers
Nanz has had some solid teams but he hasn’t put it quite together outside of his 58 win team that he had in 2003 (?). The last couple teams he has put together have been skirting to make the playoffs in the Western Conference. Sometimes I wonder what Nanz thoughts are on everything as he is pretty silent on the boards in regard to strategies or opinions on deals. His current roster is pretty good. Another team that may not be a championship contender but can hit 50+ I believe. People love Melo, not sure why they do but he’s cool, I guess. Baron’s another one of those guys as well.
I’d like to get more insight into what Nanz is thinking and how he builds his teams. Definitely has the potential to rise up the boards here a little bit in the future though.
14. JahAllStar – Washington Wizards
As Harold once said in a thread sometime today, “I have been in sims since 1993”. If that’s the case, Jah has been in sims since the reign of Charlemagne. There once was a time where you looked at every league in on the net back in the mid 2000’s and Jah’s name would be found on a GM list.
I always wondered what Jah could do as a GM if he focused in one league and gave the attention to it that a highly active GM in BBS currently does. I am not talking a dark room with a recliner, 8 monitors and a extra large Dunkachino spilling on themselves active (Skillz), but rather someone consistently making moves and trying to make their teams better. Newsflash Jah, the turnover Ghidorah of Terry, Redd and Peja is not going to win a championship. Each of those guys have some value individually that can net you something that can help, why not explore it? Jah has been steady and capable for years now, I am not sure if it’s the guy though that can bring home a championship.
I Guess This Is Where We Begin To Drop Off?
15 - Footy - Atlanta Hawks
This is tough. I think 8-14 is clear cut for me, now I kind of start to question myself with 15. There’s a couple of other guys we can get into at 15 including my number 16 guy Manas. Footy is still new to the Hawks and who the hell knows what he did in Orlando behind the scenes. I don’t think he has done a whole lot outside out of tanking and getting dudes. Shawn Marion somehow showed up on his roster the other day, missed that trade. However he hasn’t really done much terribly wrong yet. Definitely a guy who has the potential to move forward but right now is a poor man’s Mark. Really hard to grade the Mark’s, Footy’s, Trap’s and Andy’s of the world in relative comparison to the other guys.
Another guy with a solid team and a bright future but I need to see a little more GM’ing to put him higher. That will come when he wants to build his team into a competitor. Right now 15 is the spot.
Extra Note: In case you were wondering if I was secretly Trapstar because I italicized my first note, you were mistaken.
