2007 BBS Mock Draft
1. San Antonio Spurs - Kevin Durant SF 6'10'' 225 19 B B C C+ C A
Is there any question here? The next big thing in BBS, Kevin Durant is the consensus #1 selection. Prolific scorer, possible plus stocks, huge upside, and two free ACs? It's almost as if this guy was on the real life Warriors or something! Durant is an all-world talent that is an immediate cornerstone from the team he goes to, and San Antonio is poised to have that honor. Not a whole lot to say about Durant, he's the dude. Congrats to whomever lands it big in the lottery!
2. Miami Heat - Marc Gasol C 6'11'' 255 22 B- B- B- B- B- A
Will all of kobe's bitching result in a different choice here? Maybe, but I think Gasol is still the second best prospect in this draft. Maybe he doesn't end up the defensive stud people were hoping for, but I'm willing to bet he still holds his own defensively pretty well, just maybe not DPOY type stock numbers. He's starting off as a jack-of-all-trades but with good upside, he should develop into a very good big man for the Heat. He's not athletic, so I'm sure his inside scoring is pretty good to start and he should get points at the free throw line as well, which is huge for big men. I think you could go several directions with his camps, but the obvious choice is camping him out defensively and rebounding, because his scoring is probably already respectable enough. He walks a fine line between gimmick and FBB mold, so his first few TCs and camp will determine his overall success early on.
3. Houston Rockets - Joakim Noah C 6'11'' 230 22 C+ C A- B B- B
Houston needs a lot of help across the board, and since Ahsan is swearing by Paccelis (dumb) I think you can't pass on Noah here. He is arguably the right pick here regardless and the argument could be made for him going #2. Noah seems to be in the same mold as that prototypical low volume, good defensive production bigs FBB loves. His passing is pretty irrelevant, but having elite handles with the potential of 3+ stocks is awesome. Great defender, good stocks, good rebounding, sounds like the pick to me, especially if he really is the last of his kind coming out in drafts for awhile. For a guy who could easily go #2, this is the right pick here.
4. Philadelphia 76ers - Mike Conley PG 6'1'' 175 20 C B- B- C+ D+ A
The Sixers are another team that need help across the board, so I think you could argue a few guys here, but if you're building a squad you might as well start with Conley here. I don't think you take Horford or Oden over him, but some might disagree. Conley's notes look fantastic. Good upside and great handles? That's all I need to hear! Might be my second favorite player in the draft because of how PGs develop, but there's no question that the league has plenty of them at this point. Either way, the Sixers are going to be bad for awhile, so lock up and groom a young PG who looks to be great at taking care of the ball. His shot will likely develop well on its own, and a few camps to scoring should make him a very good to great starter in the league. Rebounding sucks, but hey, what can you do?
5. New Orleans Hornets - Greg Oden C 7'0'' 250 19 C+ C D+ B- B- A
I had Horford higher than Oden before notes, but I think you take the chance on Oden here over Horford now. Upside is the question, just given real world biases, so there's no reason to actually believe he can't be good here. His notes seem great, block shots and rebound, takes care of the ball, and hits his free throws? Not going to be an offensive threat, but those are all the qualities I want out of a big man, so pig should gamble on the 19 year old here. Be good big fella!
6. Los Angeles Clippers - Al Horford C 6'9'' 245 21 B- C C C+ B- A
Pretty much the same mold as Millsap, but likely with a little more upside. Looks to be a good scoring big man who can probably still be stock positive thanks to steals. I like my big men to be able to block a little, but he might still be a 1 to 1.5 BPG guy and makes up for the rest with his offense. I think a Horford/Millsap combo is pretty damn solid for the Clippers. You might be able to make the argument for Chandler here but I think Horford is probably the safest pick and should be easier to groom.
7. Sacramento Kings (from Toronto) - Spencer Hawes C 7'1'' 245 19 C+ C+ D+ C C+ A
I miss out on the safer picks here at 7 (Still love my chances to jump from lucky #7!) but I think I called it with the Spencer name! Hawes seems a like a really fun player, and if his upside is high enough, I could see him being a great project player. The combination of scoring and blocking potential here intrigues me and I think he'd be great guy to stash and camp. I don't think you take a chance on him any higher than 7, but if any of the above 6 fall to me at the cost of Hawes, I'm very okay with that. His notes scream very good player to me, but that could all be a red herring! Don't do me like that Spencer!
8. Atlanta Hawks - Wilson Chandler PF 6'8'' 235 20 B- C+ C- B C B
Really unfortunate for the Hawks if this is where their pick ends up. All the best players left, in my opinion, are SFs and tha god PJ Tucker has that locked up. However, I think you go with the best player available here, and I think that man might be Wilson Chandler. Solid scorer, good stocks, plus rebounder, not much more you could ask for at this point in the draft. Rolling into their CY, I think the Hawks need to assemble some solid pieces they can move for upgrades, and Chandler seems like a good fit for that. Could also see footy moving this pick after the lotto if it doesn't jump, because I don't see any player left in the draft that provides enough meaningful minutes for a winning team.
9. New Orleans Hornets (from Orlando) - Mirza Teletovic PF 6'7'' 231 22 B B C- C C+ B
But they already have Scola! I could see pig taking someone like Brandan Wright here, but I don't like weak ass big men, so why not take a chance on a scorer who is already close to Scola as a rookie? Camp him up and see what you have! Mirza sounds like he could be a very good scorer (slightly higher outside than Durant) and a plus rebounder at SF. Defensively, he's probably useless, but could see him providing really nice offense as a super sub, or even a starter if you can compensate for his defense with the right cast. At this point in the draft it's likely all rotation guys, so grabbing the guy with the likely best scoring out of the bunch seems like the right play.
10. Golden State Warriors - Brandan Wright C 6'10'' 210 20 B C- C- C+ C A
Drafted by the Warriors in real life, doubt manas passes on Wright. His notes are okay, high inside scoring, two stock guy. Okay not bad. Having low strength is a big concern though. Not sure where his ceiling may be in the league, but he's a Warrior. Might as well give him a go. No mention of his handling also worries me a little, but he's probably fine there. I could see him being a decent rotation big, but not much more than that. Pump camps into his strength and rebounding and see if you can lock up a cheap depth piece for the future.
11. San Antonio Spurs (from Los Angeles Lakers) - Tiago Splitter C 6'11'' 245 22 B- D+ D B- B- B
They already landed Durant, so anything else is just a bonus from here on out. Which is good, because the choices are slimming up fast! Splitter seems like a very solid rotation big. Looks just like the kind of guy you'd see get camped up in Houston then traded for Chuck Hayes. Probably not a stocks guy, which is unfortunate, but good post defense and rebounding should be worth some minutes as a third big for the right team. I'd probably take the chance on Splitter, camp up his defense and rebounding and roll with it.
12. Houston Rockets (from Phoenix) - Arron Afflalo SG 6'5'' 210 22 C+ B C- B C- B
I'm going to put Afflalo here, but let's who are we kidding? Ahsan probably drafts Carl Landry or Aaron Brooks here. Anyways, Afflalo seems like a solid player with good upside as a nice combo guard off the bench. Lack of stat defense probably keeps him from being a useful starter, but good positional defense at SG is still very valuable considering the depth of the position around the league. Grab Afflalo here, camp up his scoring, and you probably have a very good sixth man type.
13. Cleveland Cavaliers - Jeff Green SF 6'8'' 235 20 C+ C+ C+ C+ C+ B
Pretty sure Cleveland keeps their pick, but I could be wrong. Don't feel like checking protections again. Svedda probably hates every player left at this point, and probably 10 players already selected, so I'll give him whoever the hell I feel like it! Jeff Green is one of the more interesting players in the draft, and a little spicy looking at the end of the lottery. Not a lot to go on with his notes, but if he has solid potential, he could develop into a very intriguing forward. 20 years old, good size, plus rebounder. Could also go Thad Young here, but he just seems like a dude without a position. I don't know, doesn't seem that special.
14. Boston Celtics (from Minnesota) - Thaddeus Young PF 6'8'' 220 19 B- C D+ C+ C+ A
I'm not very high on Thaddeus, if I'm being honest. Looks like a much worse Renaldo Balkman. People will probably draft him higher based on age and scouted potential, but I mean, likely a SF that can't shoot, or a PF that isn't a good enough defender or rebounder. He's going to get steals, which is nice, so he may have a place in a rotation somewhere, and maybe his defense goes up at SF, but he looks like the wrong combination of PF/SF to ever be a starter. Celtics can take him and try to groom him as an eventual Walker replacement? I dunno, doesn't seem super promising, but go with the potential at this point and try it out.
15. Miami Heat (from Portland) - Rudy Fernandez SG 6'6'' 185 22 C+ B C+ C D B
No notes. Euro with C+ B scoring ratings. Kobe is taking Rudy Fernandez. With camps, he could be a nice sixth man, and we know how Euros have been running around in BBS. His rebounding sucks, so that might deter some people, but I think kobe would be willing to camp up his scoring and at least fluff him up and try to trade him. No notes on him is interesting, so I think you could take a chance here and see what he can do with camps.
16. Miami Heat (from Pistons) - Al Thornton SF 6'8'' 220 24 B B C- D C B
Not really sure where to rank Thornton. His defense is abysmal, but if he can score well enough, maybe he can find a place as a bench offensive threat. With camps and a solid TC, he could be a B+ B+/A- scorer after TC which is interesting enough at least, and he's called a good rebounder with a C, so maybe a low quickness guy? I think you could also take Carl Landry here, but the scoring potential of Thornton might at least be worth a look. He could really go anywhere from 13 to 25 probably, so who knows?
17. Los Angeles Clippers (from Sacramento) - Petteri Koponen PG 6'4'' 195 19 C+ C+ C+ C+ C B
The only other player that looks really interesting, I could actually see a few of the above GMs taking a chance on him as well, but this is the point in the draft where I don't think you let him slide any further. The Finnish wonder has super cool ratings for a 19 year old PG, but no notes, so I think the only thing that would worry me other than upside is his handling. He is almost C+ across the board however and has good rebounding for a point, which is rare. I put him this low because he almost seems too obvious to actually be any good. We've had several of these types of PGs come in the drafts and I don't think any of them have panned out, but might as well take a shot here if you're the Clippers, or I guess even the Heat at 16. I don't think he's the steal though, but if handles are decent, he could be okay with camps.
18. Philadelphia 76ers (from Memphis) - Carl Landry PF 6'9'' 248 24 B C D C C+ B
Landry doesn't look like anything special and he is 24, but his notes are pretty solid. Very strong with great inside and a good jump shot? At #18 I'm not sure you find anything better. Landry seems like a solid 20-25MPG guy on the right team. Wouldn't be surprised to see Skillz trade up and draft this guy. If Tyrus can develop his defense more, maybe a rotation of Tyrus/Landry blends pretty well. Probably not, but I'd at least like to see how Landry sims, especially if he gets some steals.
19. New Orleans Hornets (from Denver) - Jared Dudley SF 6'6'' 237 22 C+ B C- B C B
This dude is so vanilla and no notes, but he has pretty ratings so he probably goes higher, but I don't think he should. I'd rather take a chance on some of the other guys than Jared "bitchass" Dudley. I don't think he'll ever be more than what you see here. You can try to pump some camps into him, but we all know he's a 10-12mpg backup at best. And if Spencer made him a steal, then gtfo!
20. Miami Heat (from Milwaukee) - Aaron Brooks PG 6'0'' 161 22 C B C+ C D B
Brooks was a pretty fun player for a year or two in real life. Good shooter. We've seen plenty of these C B C+ PG types, and more than a handful have become pretty good with camps. I don't know if Brooks is that, but kobe will find out. Camp his scoring, solid TC, and maybe he is a C/C+ A- type. Plenty of those. Bad rebounder, probably 5 strength. He hand some pretty good bounce to him in real life, so that could be a negative here. I remember him getting up there for some alley oops! Also had a nasty ass block on Robin Lopez.
21. Atlanta Hawks (from New Jersey) - Rodney Stuckey SG 6'5'' 210 21 B- C+ B- C C- B
People may be higher on Stuckey than I am, so he probably goes way higher in this draft, but he shouldn't. His notes make me think he has turnover problems. What good is combo guard depth if they're coughing the ball up as much or more than your starter! Just don't like the sound of "likes to have the ball in his hands." I could just be reading into that wrong though.
22. Washington Wizards - Glen Davis C 6'9'' 289 21 B- C D- C+ C+ B
As is tradition, I look for the most jah-esque player remaining and toss them jah's way. Jah seems like a Big Baby type of a guy, so he takes Glen Davis here. I could see him going with a Corey Brewer type, but jah usually drafts an average big man and camps him up to being serviceable, so Glen Davis looks like he might fit that mold. Probably a decent scorer, positional defender, and rebounder. Perfect for jah and the Wizards.
23. Boston Celtics - Corey Brewer SF 6'9'' 186 21 C+ C+ D B D B
Scoring a weakness, you hate to see it. Could be a good steals guy and won't turn the ball over. I think Brian has drafted enough low volume shooters, so I don't see him going that route this time around. Grab Brewer, give him some outside love, and maybe he is an okay rotation wing. His rebounding sucks though, so maybe not.
24. New Orleans Hornets (from Dallas) - Yi Jianlian PF 7'0'' 240 20 B- B- C- C C B
Yi "The Chairman" Jianlian. An apt nickname because he will probably never leave the bench, but maybe just once, Jianlian is a steal in a league. Just once I wish this guy was good. Maybe his defense takes a jump at SF, because that's where he'd be playing. Seems like a longshot, but I'd take him here just with some hopes his time has finally come.
25. New Orleans Hornets (from Chicago) - Julian Wright SF 6'8'' 225 20 B- C C- C D+ A
Nothing to see here other than A scouted. Reminds me of Ndudi Ebi or whatever. Maybe his defense goes up at SG, since he definitely isn't worth playing at SF with that rebounding. See if he improves in TC any, give him some RCs if so. Maybe he blows up? At 25, might as well go with the A scouted.
26. San Antonio Spurs (from Indiana) - Josh McRoberts C 6'10'' 240 20 C+ C C- B- C+ B
I don't think you can expect much from McRoberts, but we've seen some of these bigs get camped to okay status. You can't really go wrong with anyone at this point in the draft because you can't really go right! Camp this big dude up to maybe a C+/B/B guy eventually and use him as a third or fourth big. Not sure you can get much more.
27. Indiana Pacers (from Utah) - Sean Williams C 6'10'' 235 21 C+ D+ D+ B- C+ C
Could low key see Williams going a lot higher if people value his potential shot-blocking ability, but he looks like he has very little upside, if any, and won't be much of a rebounder either. Shot-blocking will always have some value, and Williams could be an 85+ Blocking guy. Chance it and camp his rebounding.
28. San Antonio Spurs (from Seattle) - Sun Yue SG 6'9'' 205 22 C+ B- B C D+ C
Sun Yue looks fun! At least better than Belinelli and Young! Pair him up with Yao Ming! And draft Yi Jianlian if Yi falls to 26! Seems fun but ultimately pointless. Yue looks like a guy that could be a fun steal type player, so roll the dice.
29. Atlanta Hawks (from New York) - Marco Belinelli SG 6'5'' 210 21 C A- C- C+ D B
I suppose it's finally time for the low volume shooters. They don't provide anything other than shooting. Bad defender and bad rebounding, Belinelli is just as likely to be a 2nd Rounder, but there's not much left at this point. Could swap him out with Nick Young. They both look equally meh.
