So, we have decided to give the Hot Takes House a bit of a break and have switched it up. Instead, for this article, we shall do an over or under. I ask a question, the dudes here tell me if they go over the number set or under. Today I have Orlando Magic Johnson Galo the original michael and Go Niners as my panalists. Let's get to it.
1.5 teams make the CY in the East
Go Niners - OVER. Feel like both the Hornets and 76ers have enough pieces to win at least 42. Crawford/Granger/ZBo/Kaman is nice for the Hornets, they should be able to add another big and some depth. The 76ers got what is IMO the best CY team of the 5 with Oden/Nene/TMac/Melo/Rose plus solid depth pieces like Ingles, Thornton, Milicic. Plus both Steve and Pig are constantly making moves to get better.
the original michael - Over. I'll say that both the New Orleans Hornets and Philadelphia 76ers make it. It won't be easy for either as the East has more contending teams than last season, but both have solid rosters and should make it.
nybombers3 - Over. I think both teams have enough overall talent to make noise. Obviously things really depend on how good/bad TC is but I think they both will be fine. Some teams in the East have dropped out and nobody obvious has replaced them (aside from the CY teams) so they'll be fine.
Galo - Over. I think Pig/Steve both make it - even if they have to get 42 or 45 in Steve's case to get there. The Sixers are loaded at the wing spot and just got Eddie Griffin fairly cheap so should be OK. I'm concerned about who plays PG if Rose gets hurt. Other than Stuckey and Kaman, Pig didn't have a great TC and will have to rely heavily on Granger, Crawford and ZBo who he's shopping. Overall, with some teams dropping out this year, they should be fine.
2.5 teams make the CY in the West
Go Niners - UNDER. I feel fairly confident about the Timberwolves making it because Bosh/Parker just look like such a sick combo (especially with Butler, Okur, Carroll, Lopez in the mix). I'm honestly not sure about the Clippers or Lakers. Feel like Lakers could have made it last season but opted to tank for Curry which leaves them stuck with tanking players such as Lamar Odom and Gerald Wallace, both immovable. Regardless, the backcourt of Rondo/Hughes is nice and Smoove/Jordan nice up front, just feel like they got question marks on depth. As far as the Clippers go, I think Amare was a nice pickup, Millsap looks damn solid, I'm just not sold on Deron or Westbrook or Mayo or JR Smith. Feel like they still have to make some moves to be competitive.
the original michael - Wolves, Clippers, and Lakers right? Hmm. Under. Is it possible only 1 makes it? Or none? Maybe. I don't like the construction of the Clippers roster. Deron/RW don't work together and both need a hell of a training camp. They acquired Amare, but he is not a difference maker. The Lakers make some solid depth moves, but nothing major and are banking on a strong TC. The Wolves are the same boring Wolves roster with Bosh. I'm much more confident in the East teams than I am these West teams.
nybombers3 - Under. I don't even know which of the three won't but I just don't see it happening that all three do it. I don't really love any of the teams currently. I can see them all clumping around the bottom of the West. The Clippers and Lakers both have a massive expiring along with a(n) asset to add. The Wolves need to hope they can land someone solid with their MLE and/or make a trade for some good 5th starter/bench guy. Bosh/Parker is good though.
Galo - Under. I think at least 1 team doesn't make it in the West between the Lakers, Clippers, T-Wolves. I think the Lakers have the best shot right now followed up the Clippers, then the Wolves. Other than the TP trade, jeb hasn't done alot to try to improve that team. He still has some picks at his disposal but we'll see how he operates. Nanz has drafted well recently, (DJ, Boone, Pat Bev) although injuries worry me for them since they are close to HC with 10 players currently. Clippers look pretty good but don't have a lot of big depth aside from Amare and Millsap with a bunch of older bigs on the roster (Dice, Sheed, Ernest Brown). I think all 3 teams need some good luck in different variations this season.
33.2 ppg for Curry in his rookie season
Go Niners - UNDER. I drafted DD and he is the only rookie to have done 33.2 and capture the scoring title. He was the greatest draft pick ever having the greatest rookie season ever and that was MY pick. So no, nobody will touch him. Steph will have the better career but 33.2 with scoring title as a rookie belongs to DD!!!
the original michael - Under. 32PPG for Curry! He's going to an absolute superstar and I'm bummed I missed out on him. DB has the league's best player in Curry.
nybombers3 - Under. I can easily see him hitting 30 ppg but anything over that is pretty wild to see. Unless I missed it, 33.2 is the record for rookie scoring. Didn't see to many dudes even come close to it and while Steph may come close, I just don't see him hitting it.
Galo - Under. I think he'll get 28ish his rookie season. Dan is a seasoned vet and might want to tank another season with that roster. He's got some good young players but I think he wants to add another young stud next to Curry. Steph will be insane at his peak but I think 33 ppg by season's end would be remarkable.
7 tpg for Harden/Tyreke combined this season
Go Niners - UNDER. The only reason I'm saying under is because I fully expect Harden to play SG with Arenas in Indy limiting his turnovers to less than 3 so even if Reke does 4, it'll still be under.
the original michael - Under. If Harden were playing PG, then over. But he will be at SG. I'm still expecting 2-3 topg at SG. Evans should be at SG as well. He is not a point guard.
nybombers3 - Over - More so me hoping but I can still see Harden doing around 3 even at the 2. Evans will hopefully be my starter and while I don't want him averaging a crazy amount of turnovers, I can see him doing something over 4.
Galo - Over? I mean both guys are combo guys playing PG right? I'm not sure if Harden will play PG in Indy right now. Tyreke is probably going to lead the charge here but it could potentially happen where both guys are hovering over 3.5 TOPG.
3.5 of the PG’s in the lotto become useful players
Go Niners - OVER. Obviously Curry and Holiday are a given. Harden is PG-eligible so he'll be useful too no matter what. Feel like Rubio's skillset is such that he can be a solid fifth starter at the very least (like a Rondo who had a terrific year for the Lakers last season). That's 4, then you take a look at Evans & Beverley and both seem like they can be solid players at the very least. I don't think Evans & Harden have a future at PG here but they'll be useful players.
the original michael - Over. Jrue, Curry, Harden, Rubio all will be quality starters here, if not All-Stars at one point. I really really love this PG class. There are some guys even outside of the lotto that might turn out great.
nybombers3 - Over - Curry and Harden should be great. Jrue and Rubio should be solid players. Past that, it'll be interesting to see what Evans and Beverly do. Still, it's over for me.
Galo - Galo- Over. Steph, Mills, Pat, Rubio, Jrue. That's 5 at least that should be good. We know that Steph will be great. Jrue had a rough 1st TC but like what I saw out of Pat, Mills and Rubio. I think they'll be some good production from these guys.
0.5 controversial Hue trades this season
Go Niners - OVER. Fully expect Royal to do some stupid shit. Not only that, there are so many of us (especially with the Spurs back in the crew and the hiring of the Raptors+Magic) so it's hard for something controversial not to happy.
the original michael - Over. Unfortunately it'll be over. It should be 0 since royal is tanking, but he's always looking for wild crazy deals. I wouldnt be surprised to see another one.
nybombers3 - Under - Going to assume that this year will be a pretty boring one tbh when it comes to wild trades. I don't see any of the CY teams getting a gift like was attempted last season and past that I just don't see it happening in group this year.
Galo - Way Over. The Hue Crew will always provide us some fun trades to poke at esp with Royal at the center of it all. I'm not sure what JR and the Jazz are doing but they've been quiet after last year's WCF appearance. Booker T and Zev will continue to take on the bad contracts around the hue crew until it's time to win.
0.5 worthwhile pieces from Arenas trade for the Pistons
Go Niners - OVER. I actually like Hibbert. He wasn't amazing as a rookie but I liked his notes a ton. Feel like he'll become a very solid big in this league with time. Also he was able to draft Jerbeko and Casspi, both seem interesting to me. And a couple more firsts which may not be the best, but in this market, you can def flip for fun things.
the original michael - Over. That's insulting. Hibbert with camps will be at the worst a solid 3rd big. The picks could turn out to be something as well. Galo got a fresh start at a rebuild now.
nybombers3 - Over - I mean I had to ask, sorry Galo. I think they'll have some solid pieces from the trade. Nothing close to what Arenas was but they'll have some decent assets from this trade.
Galo - I think Over? Obviously, I'm biased but I think Hibbert will be a serviceable big. Jonas and Casspi are showing signs of useful rotational guys or low end starters potentially. Still 2 other picks left this season. We'll see - didn't get great value for Arenas but
55.5 wins for the Heat
Go Niners - OVER. They won 55 last season and just added Dirk. They did give up key players to get him BUT they got Ben/Love/Dirk/Mirza/Harris, Ersan too. And Kobe is always making moves to get better. Feel like you have to give credit where credit is due.
the original michael - Over. Dirk at SG is unfair. Dirk, Love, and Harris is solid as fuck and Teletubby is no slouch on the wing. Ben probably declines in TC, but this team is solid.
nybombers3 - Over - I can see them hitting around 58 wins. They should be the favorites to win it all. The addition of Dirk plus a potentially good TC (kobe is due) should put them over the top
Galo - Slightly under. I think they'll be a 50 win team as long as kobe doesn't tear it down but not sure. With 2 CY teams in the East, they'll be some competitive so not sure if 55 is feasible but it can certainly happen.
10.5 wins for the Magic
Go Niners - OVER. He doesn't have his pick so he has to try this season. Acquiring Andre Miller was solid, feel like Eli would make more moves. But no way in hell is he giving Royal Paul George.
the original michael - Over. It's tough to be under double digit wins. If he camps Jrue, he should be a good player off the bat for the Orlando Magic. I expect him to be a near 20PPG guy which will get the team to at least 11 wins.
nybombers3 - Over. He doesn't have his own pick. Might as well try to pick up cheap talent. Still, I seriously doubt they hit the single digits again. I can see around 20 to 25 wins, depending on trades.
Galo - Slightly over. I say they'll get 12 wins. They've got much better vets now than last year including Andre Miller, Rashard Lewis, and Rasho Nesterovic. Add in Jrue this year and that should get you at least 12-15 wins you would think.
0.5 under .500 teams make the playoffs
Go Niners - UNDER. The East is still tough and two teams are now entering CY. The West now has three teams entering CY. Not that many dumping everything for a rebuild (infact, seems like more and more teams are getting competitive right now).
the original michael - Under. With all the CY teams and teams competing, I don't think we'll see sub .500 teams in the playoffs. Not many teams are tanking like they were in 2007 and 2008. I'd be shocked.
nybombers3 - Under - I don't see a ton of tanking happening this year and a lot of teams just kind of hanging around. I feel like there will be teams that are close that will decide to make moves to try to go for the reset.
Galo - Under. I think everyone that makes the playoffs will have a winning record this year. This goes especially in the East but the West might have some teams that finish with 42-44 wins in the West I think.
BONUS:
Give me your BBS finals prediction
Orlando Magic Johnson - This is incredibly tough damn. I will say Heat vs. Jazz and the Heat win in 7.
Go Niners - Rockets over idgaf in 6!!! With my new 4-center starting lineup, nobody will be able to handle our size/tenacity. No more small ball, onto big ball.
the original michael - Spurs and Heat and Spurs win in 7.
nybombers3 - Heat Vs Sonics with the Heat winning in 6
Galo - Cavs over Spurs in 7. Svedda/KB get their 3rd BBS ring in Cleveland. KD goes to his 2nd straight Finals but falls short. A full Hue Finals. Hate and love to see it at the same time.
