00’ Eastern Conference Executive(s) of the Year
(according to Galo)
AND the nominees are…
GM- Skillz
Record- 59-23 (1st in East, 1st in Atlantic)
Resume- In usual skillz fashion, he utilized his trade game and maximized it to the conference’s best record this season. With 11 trades made including the creation draft, he was able to nab the league’s premier point guard along with an aging Michael Jordan plus some bruising bigs in the frontcourt with Arvydas Sabonis, Hakeem Olajuwon and Jamal Mashburn. The art of upgrade has been a specialty of skillz over the years and was shown at its finest in BBS20’s inaugural season.
Best Trade- Knicks/Pacers deal. NY lands Steve Nash in exchange for a high scoring but turnover prone Latrell Sprewell and Glenn ‘Big Dog’ Robinson. Nash was brought intp to form one of the powerful assist tandems with Jason Kidd. However, it didn’t last long as Kidd was shipped out in a deal involving Mashburn.
Most Questionable Move- Knicks/Sixers deal. Kidd and Steve Smith were moved out to Philly for Mashburn, Kerry Kittles and their 01’ first. While Kidd eventually was then dealt to Miami then Dallas ultimately, his value will be felt in the upcoming years as he hits his prime and gets his turnovers under control. Skillz could always get him back in a trade too and come full circle again.
Editor rank- 1st. The depth and star power on this roster is remarkable although this off-season will be interesting as there will be some interesting questions if Olajuwon and Jordan choose to hang them up. Either way, he’ll find a way to compete in the East for the next 2 seasons at least.
GM(s)- Play & insane
Record- 58-24 (2nd in the East, 1st in Central)
Resume- Who’s really steering the ship in Chicago, play or insane? Either way, two minds are better than one and after a really strong creation draft, the Bulls future is bright. Wing Michael Finley and big man Tony Massenberg were great finds and value picks where they got taken in the creation draft. Center Marcus Camby was also an excellent selection as he’s already established as one of league’s best big men and he’s only 26 entering his prime years. The team has a good blend of youth and veterans that will keep them competitive in the east for a long time.
Best Move- Juwan Howard and Jerome Moiuso as 3rd round picks in creation draft. The Bulls turned heads when they made Moiso their second selection in the 3rd round. However, the 22 year old out of UCLA has quietly been impressive with some big games and potential to be a nice big with the right camps. Meanwhile, Howard is one of the most underrated forwards in the league averaging almost 5 assists per game.
Most Questionable Move- Bruce Bowen in the 4th round of the creation draft. I’m sure the Bulls would want this one back with a redo. Although Bowen sports a goudy defensive rating of A+, the experiment was short lived in Chicago and was dealt for Malik Rose at the deadline. Double ouch on the value but maybe Rose will help out more next year.
Editor rank- 3rd. This is a very underrated team that was nearly unbeatable at home. They have a few weaknesses including lack of superstar power but this team has a lot of tools and attributes of long success in BBS. Not a lot of moves during the regular season drop them to 3rd in this editor’s mind.
GM- greeme
Record- 56-26 (3rd in the East, 2nd in Atlantic)
Resume- Most around the league thought the Nets were the frontrunner and would run away with the East early on in the season. They feature a nasty frontcourt of Dikembe Mutumbo, Ben Wallace, Dale Davis along with sharpshooter Glen Rice. Former Seminole Charlie Ward has been a revelation at point guard for the Nets and one of the league’s best kept secrets averaging just under 19 points a game and almost 2 steals a game. The Nets might have underachieved a bit this season but this is as well rounded a roster as you’ll see right now.
Best Move(s)- Charlie Ward in the 3rd round of Creation Draft & Nets/Celtics deal. Greeme landed a valuable trade chip (Boston 2002 1st) in exchange for the New Orleans 02’ 1st rounder. This seems to be his biggest asset moving forward since Greeme has dealt all his picks through 2003. Also, it was a great move to get Charlie Ward in the 3rd round given his production.
Most Questionable Move- Nets/Lakers creation draft deal. The Nets betted heavy early on in dealing their 01 and 03 1sts to LA in exchange for a creation 2nd and 4th rounder. While they are reaping the benefits now, they have some older players on the roster and may need to start looking at getting young in 2-3 years.
Editor Rank- 2nd. This team does not have a lot of holes right now and have a big trade chip in the Celtics pick next year if they want to cash it in for an upgrade at SG for Doug Christie (Sprewell maybe?) or just parlay it to more assets down the road.
GM- kobe
Record- 45-37 (8th in the East, 3rd in Atlantic)
Resume- BBS’ loudest mouth GM and most intense (other words were considered here) trade pursuer put together a great ending in the 2000 season by earning the last spot in the playoffs while reshaping his roster at the same time. After flip flopping between competing and rebuilding several times, he was able to develop some strong young talent in swingman Ricky Davis, guard Tony Delk and big man Brian Skinner. The Heat were also one of the highest scoring teams in the league for most of the year.
Best Move- Heat/Sixers deal then Heat/Mavs deal. kobe pulled a rabbit out of his hat in turning Marbury and 1st for Jason Kidd who then was dealt to Dallas for an up and coming Tracy McGrady. These trades seemed to work for everyone at least in the short terms since the Sixers got 42 wins, Mavs got their floor general for next year while injured and allowing them to continue losing and the Heat got T-Mac to grow with Davis and compete against Kobe and Crawford for most devastating scoring combo.
Most Questionable Move- Spurs/Heat creation draft deal. The Heat traded up from the third round to get Mike Miller while giving up their 3rd and 4th rounders. San Antonio ended up taking Eddie House with one of those picks while Miller was flipped to Dallas in the T-Mac deal
Editor Rank- 4th. Miami has a very good core for the next several years and one of the brightest futures in the East. They are a couple of pieces away from 50+ wins and competing at a high level in the East.
Honorable Mention-
GM- Von
Record- 55-27 (4th in the East, 2nd in the Central)
Resume- Pig has quietly put together a very nice roster of players highlighted by All-League center Alonzo Mourning. They have a very good frontline in Karl Malone, Anthony Mason and Mourning along with Jerry Stackhouse and Terrell Brandon in the backcourt.
Editor rank- 5th. However, outside of their 2 major deals in the creation draft, the team hasn’t made any other small moves to get them better depth or another shot blocker to add to Zo. However, the Hornets are still a dark horse to win the East when it’s all said and done.
