Article: The BBS Trade Machine – 2001
So let’s get to it. Same rules as always, this time with a bonus trade. I present to you, BBS family, 5 BBS trades that are ready to be processed. If you so wish, you may post these trades. I only ask for a 2nd round pick donation for your time.
Heat Trade
Bo Outlaw
Chucky Atkins
Jazz Trade
Bobby Jackson
Derek Anderson
Robert Horry
Ousmane Cisse
Why for the Heat? The Heat have everything they need to build an elite team: two super-scoring wings, defensive bigs and solid depth. But they don’t have a good enough Point Guard to compete at the highest level. Atkins was a steal for the low price of….nothing….but he’s an average starter at best. Bobby Jackson is literally a championship-quality PG and would propel the Heat to new heights. The only reason they get some extra value added on is because Jackson doesn’t have birds.
Why for the Jazz? JR has been bemoaning the lack of a second shot-blocker and defender next to D-Rob (how greedy!) and Outlaw is the guy. The Jazz don’t get a lot of steals and Outlaw is also a steals menace. Utah never turns it over so can also more than makeup for Outlaw’s turnover whorishness. JR stole Sarunas in Free Agency and can give him +8 to his handles and make him an upgrade over Bobby Jackson. Someone call Wells Fargo because this would be a nice use of asset management.
Hornets Trade
Alonzo Mourning
Jerry Stackhouse
Grizzlies Trade
Zydrunas Ilgauskas
Jalen Rose
Why for the Hornets? Zo is amazing, but I just don’t see a path for a championship here. The rest of the team is thin, old and just not good enough. I think Pig needs to chase value in a retool move and this deal would definitely qualify. Z is one of the better young Centers in the league and Jalen Rose is an all-star caliber SG in his own right. Both players are in the middle of their respective prime’s. This would be an awesome trade.
Why for the Grizzlies? I think Erbes underestimates how close he is to reaching contender status and when you are close, you need to go after the prize. This deal is a clear value loss, especially because Stackhouse is persona non grada, but Mourning might be the most underrated star in the league. He is a true superstar who can put a team on his back. The Grizzlies have excellent complementary depth and would have a real shot at a title with Mourning leading the charge.
Cavs Trade
Keith Van Horn
Kelvin Cato
Bulls Trade
Marcus Camby
Juwan Howard
Why for the Cavs? The Cavs have an embarrassment of riches at their wing spots and don’t really NEED both Hill and KVH. By making a trade like this, Cleveland would be able to go toe-to-toe with the Nets loaded frontcourt and have more depth and secondary pieces than the Nets. I think they become title favorites. Camby – KG – Howard – Hill – GP is a beautiful lineup that will dominate the boards. Rebounding is important!
Why for the Bulls? The Bulls need a star to propel them into long-term contender status, and Camby is not that guy. I think Camby is an ELITE 3rd or 4th best player, but he is not dynamic enough to be a team’s building block. Van Horn may have defensive limitations, but he is absolutely a star and has 27/8 potential. Pairing him with Finley would give the Bulls an excellent SG/SF duo with which to build.
Mavericks Trade
Tony Parker
Vladamir Radmonovic
Gordon Giricek
2 VET FA’s
Bucks Trade
Rasheed Wallace
Why for the Mavericks? One of Kidd or Parker will inevitably be traded, and here we choose Parker. Although Habes has discussed is disdain for Rasheed on the boards, and will almost definitely hate this trade, I think he’d actually be a decent fit in the Mavericks frontcourt. JO and Kmart don’t have turnover concerns, and Sheed would give the Mavericks a dynamic defensive frontcourt to pair with Kidd and the squad’s shooters. Parker was a steal at # 6 and parlaying him into Rasheed Wallace seems like it would be a nice result for everyone.
Why for the Bucks? The Bucks may be near a tear-down, and Rasheed is the type of player who will lose value on a rebuilding team. He is not meant to handle this world as a # 1 or # 2 option and is best as a complementary player. With bad players around him, he’s going to shoot a worse percentage and turn the ball over. Tony Parker has the IT – under-the-hood ratings that far outstrip what you see on the roster page. He could be one of the most valuable player in the league down the road.
Timberwolves Trade
Latrell Sprewell
Sharif Abdur Rahim
Suns Trade
Danny Manning
Eddie Robinson
Marko Jaric
Suns 2002 1st
Suns 2003 1st
Why for the Wolves? I guess I missed the mark when I commended Jeb for this Spree trade and hounded Sargo. Weird. I thought Spree was good but he randomly has simmed horribly. Anyway, I just don’t see an obvious path forward to contention for the Timberwolves. Too many holes. Any trade towards contention would need to involve sacrificing future picks, which is inherently risky. I think resetting this team and consciously building around VC might be the best path forward.
Why for the Suns? Buy-low, sell-high. I don’t think there are many good players available for “1st only” offers and I think this is about the best the Suns could hope to do with their 02 and 03 1sts. Spree might not be sexy now, but he’s shown that he can contribute in certain systems (he averaged like 23/8 for us in 20 games as a 3rd option) and SAR is not a bad player. If the Suns can harness the talent of both players, this isn’t a bad chance to take. If Spree and SAR start simming better, Andrew can turn around and trade them for a lot more than 2 total 1st round picks.
Nets Trade
Mike Miller
Devean George
Nets 2004 1st Round Pick
Magic Trade
Antoine Walker
Why for the Nets? Antoine Walker is not a player who Greeme would typically go after, but let’s buck convention! With Walker at SF, the Nets would probably build-up the best rebounding differential in league history and would be a shoe-in for the title. He’s not a perfect player, but he’d weirdly be perfect for the Nets in this situation. New Jersey needs another volume scorer and an upgrade at SF, and this trade qualifies.
Why for the Magic? This deal probably isn’t good enough to land Walker, but I just don’t see that many suitors for a Small Forward like him. I am putting a lot of stock in that Nets 2004 1st because MJ is 38, Deke is 35 and I don’t know if Walker+Ben could sustain a great team together. Mike Miller is 21 and can shoot. I’m sure some GM’s would even prefer Miller to Walker in a vacuum. This is an imperfect trade for both but I think both teams may ultimately feel better about their respective situations after it’s posted.
