Red’s PEF Commish Challenge Analysis
Well everyone, Spencer said he wanted to know what was out there league wide, about Centers and PGs, so Red always one to be good at compiling lists has stepped up. Since one was done last night that had every position, Red decided it was the best thing to do to include everyone that scores more than 15 a game, other than rooks cause they were just covered. First, we look at the Centers, which was hard to find, as several teams didn’t even have a Center listed. Also, they had to be worth rating, there are some cringeworthy Centers out there. Duncan as everyone knows is heads better than everyone.
Next come the PG. Much better group to compare, with Nash being heads and tails better than everyone, but Stockton and Crawford make a strong showing. For some reason, I always see Kidd’s name brought up and he comes in 4th. Now for the rest, players averaging over 15ppg were chosen, but again the rooks get tossed as they were just done. How about how tightly bunched SGs are at the top. MJ is trying to keep the bar set high so that in retirement, he’ll be the highest rated player that isn’t named Duncan. And the last group is the SF with KVH taking top honors. Since this season is still such a small sample size, these were done with career numbers. Onto the PF we go. How about my man KG leading the pack! That’s what I’m talking about, and he should be on the Celtics. Speaking of the Celtics, look at the sleeper in Smith quietly rising up the ranks of the best Power Forwards out there. Of 100 games, only 15 have come at SF. For those that do not read ever article I little history about the RPEF:
I looked at the PER formula by John Hollinger, and realized while I would not mind programming it, doing it in excel would blow chunks. So I looked at combining a basic version of his idea with the outdated ( (ppg+R+A+B+S-TO) to come up with a rating that not only rewarded a good EFT, but also penalized people from missing fee points. I’m sure Shaq hates this formula that I developed. While it really hurt his points portion of the formula, his nonstop rebounding and the best assist per game rate of any of the Centers has him as one of the best Centers in the game. Now to validate the formula I looked at historical data of some of the best players to ever play the game and then further tweaked the formula to reward steals a tad more than blocks as a block doesn’t automatically cause a turnover. At no point was the PEF copied or tweaked, just a few ideas about what he has done.

So Im guessing 17 or 18 would be near ideal. 6 centers with Bradley at 6. 10 PGs.

Well I mean it is kind of a meaningless statistic... no one knows what it signifies.

By that I mean, the statistic I calculate for players is basically points added or saved. So a shot made adds a certain number of points vs a generic possession. A turnover loses a certain number of points. A steal saves a certain number of points. Etc. so the stat actually has a translatable value.

Like what does a difference of 1 signify?

I meant it doesn’t directly equal something. Like what does a difference of 1 signify? After looking closely, I think spence nailed it, 17-18 is the sweet spot , anything better is heading towards studliness, anything worse... is filler. 1 point is degrees of studliness versus not. Now sadly, there is no way to quantify a players def ability / affect
