Say Something Nice! West Edition!
Time to say some nice stuff about the West! Lots of good teams and GMs in this conference so I don’t think it should be too hard, but let’s see!
Time to say some nice stuff about the West! Lots of good teams and GMs in this conference so I don’t think it should be too hard, but let’s see!
Midwest Division
Dallas Mavericks
GM: Habes
Team: The Mavs are another one of those teams that has tried to go from tank to tops in a single year and it’s going pretty well so far! A core built around JO-Mash-Kidd-Parker is super nice. Add in secondary pieces like Glen Rice and Steve Smith and this team looks pretty well rounded. One underrated aspect of this team is their defensive prowess. They rank #3 in oFG%. Now that they have another scorer in Mash it should only be a matter of time before they get over .500 for good!
GM: I think it would be hard to dispute if I were to say that Habes is the best poster in the league. Doesn’t put up the volume of some other GMs, but when he does spam it’s at least funny and entertaining! He also tends to be a big softy, but doesn’t like to show it! Always helping out the newbies. And outside of Skillz he’s the most active on the trade market always looking to deal. Huge positive for the league. Hopefully one day Spence rewards him with a night sim. Hopefully.
Denver Nuggets
GM: Covid
Team: The Shaq Attack! What an absolute beast. Best thing going for him? Early on he’s cut his topg by 1.2 from last season. Everyone agreed that 3.7 topg was an issue, but 2.5 is much more tolerable from your #1 option. Shaq shares the paint with Patrick Ewing (putting up 17/8 at 39!) and Antonio McDyess, who is having an absolute beast of a year putting up 22/10/1. The Nuggs may be old, but that just means they have a lot of experience! That could come in handy as they push for the playoffs this year.
GM: Covid is active and has lots of interesting opinions! He fits right in at BBS, honestly.
Houston Rockets
GM: Ilovebball aka Ahsan
Team: Has anyone ever been this good at tanking? This roster is rough! But hey Shawn Marion looks like a bonafide dude. 24/11/1/1 from a 23 year old is super tasty! Best part about him is that he doesn’t look to be ruining the tank, and that’s most important right now. Last year’s 1st round pick, Kwame Brown, didn’t have a great TC, but his numbers look decent for an uncamped 19 year old. A couple ACs and this dude might be a serviceable big in a league starved for them.
GM: Ahsan seems to be everyone’s punching bag from the other league that infiltrated BBS (UOSL?). He seems pretty okay to me! He’s done a really good job of amassing draft capital, amassing 7 1st round picks over the next 3 drafts. One of them, the Nuggets 03, looks especially promising. People also forget that the Rockets snuck into the playoffs last year, extending their CY, and allowing them to go full tank. I think that was a good thing!
Minnesota Timberwolves
GM: Jeb
Team: The T-Wolves have two studly 24 year olds in Vince Carter and Shareef Abdur-Rahim. VC is doing 28/8/1.5 with only 1.9 topg as a #1 option. That’s a real asset the T-Wolves could flip into multiple pieces or picks if they decide to retool or rebuild. VC and Damon Stoudamire are the primary reasons why the T-Wolves rank #3 in 3P% as a team, however, add in another scorer like Sprewell and it’s easy to see why the team ranks in the top half of the league in a lot of offensive categories!
GM: Jeb seems like a good guy! I routinely receive PMs from him talking about deals and the offers aren’t bad! I think he has his team poised for a really good rebuild once they catch up to their picks in 04. VC and SAR should fetch really good packages!
San Antonio Spurs
GM: ukfanjohn
Team: Ughhhhhhhhhhhh Zo. What could have been! Se la vie! Adding Zo to a core of Lamar Odom, Manu Ginobili, and Zach Randolph, who by the way are all under 25, is so good. This obviously catapults Spurs into contender status for the West, not just this year, but for like 5 years to come. A monumental shift. By the way Odom, Z-Bo, and Manu were all averaging more than 18 ppg on very good percentages. This team looks fantastic.
GM: I mean GM of the year for prying away Zo for picks only? Seriously. John now has the best big and best youth (debate me!) in the league. Most competing teams lack a competent PG, but he has Damon Jones - who is serviceable! Other than Zo not being camped, other underrated part of this deal? He held on to Boston’s 04 pick! That shit is going to be gold. Wow.
Utah Jazz
GM: JR
Team: The returning champs have another good team! Led by Allan Houston (30 ppg) and Glenn Robinson (24 pgg), the Jazz have a very well rounded team. It even looks like they have two competent PGs! Bobby Jackson and Sarunas Jaskievicius are a two headed PG monster. All of that adds up to the top scoring team in the league (by a full 2.5 points!), 3rd best shooting team, and best 3-point shooting team. Truly an offensive juggernaut.
GM: Can’t say anything bad about a championship winning GM! JR went for it in the inaugural season and pulled it off. He made some really good creation draft moves and hit on all of them. He hasn’t made many moves this year, but there’s not much to improve! JR also seems like a reasonable dude and is a good poster. Glad he could join this iteration of BBS!
Pacific Division
Golden State Warriors
GM: Manasrai
Team: Fuck the Warriors!!!!! Kidding!! As everyone is aware the Warriors knocked out the amazin’ Grizz in last year’s playoffs behind an other-worldly Dirk Nowitzki. He has continued his dominance in year 2 posting a line of 32/10/1 on 50% shooting. Does this not put him in the same conversation as Duncan? Maybe! The Warriors also boast one of the least talked about PGs in the league - Chauncey Billups! 24 ppg, 48% shooting, and only 1.6 topg. Actually insane that we don’t talk about this guy. Those are two legit studs that could carry the Warriors past the 1st round in this year’s playoffs!
GM: Manas is another BBS vet, but it feels like he’s being more active this version - which is great! He’s done a really good job of being competitive without sacrificing future assets. I’m excited to see what he can do with this squad!
Los Angeles Clippers
GM: Darell/Frongie
Team: Tim Duncan. There’s nothing more. He will truly be the bane of every West team for the next 10 seasons. I don’t need to get into the stats. He’s just a god. Larry Johnson provides good complimentary scoring. Not much is needed when you have the best defensive team in the league!
GM(s): Darell is a really cool dude. Been in multiple sims with him. Stays out of the fray and is a consistent poster. Also big respect for admitting that he needed an AGM, and then actually listening to the advice given. Frongie seems like a super active guy that needs his own team ASAP. He writes really quality articles and brings another dimension to the league!
Los Angeles Lakers
GM: Nanz
Team: The Lakers have been stung by the injury bug this year otherwise I think this is pretty easily a playoff team in the much improved West. Elton Brand looks like a completely new player in sunny LA putting up 19/11/2.5. Hughes and Arenas form a deadly backcourt duo that are putting up major points on super efficient %’s. Both hitting above 40% from deep is pretty good! Also really like Samake. I think he has a future as a 3rd big on a team and can be super useful for a Lakers team pushing to the promiseland.
GM: My man Fernando. Some would say he’s the clown of the New Canaan Crew, however, I think he has the biggest heart. That’s often the case isn’t it? I wouldn’t be shocked to hear that Nanz openly wept at the beginning of the movie Up. Real men cry. Nanz is also super active on the boards and the dude makes trades! Love that he’s back in BBS.
Phoenix Suns
GM: Andrew
Team: Tanky McTank Tank! Guys I think Pau is going to be so good. The turnovers are already coming down and the points are going up. A few RC/ACs to rebounding and blocking, and we’re looking at 25/10/2 big. Those are rare in this landscape! More importantly it looks like they can take with Pau and that’s huge. Weirdly enough, the Suns are 6th best at preventing points! I think a lot of that has to do with defensive stud Baron Davis. More scoring would be nice, but he’s averaging more than 2 steals per game and obviously playing lockdown perimeter D. Not bad turnovers for a 22 year old either! Could definitely have a future on this Suns team.
GM: What a brightspot Andrew is for the league. Posts a lot and has a lot of positivity. I really hope he pulls off this rebuild and makes CY. Would hate to lose him!
Portland Trail Blazers
GM: Dan
Team: Another super bright, young team in the West! Led by big Ed Curry, the Trail Blazers are starting 4 guys under 25. Curry, Wallace, Harrington, and Hamilton all look to have a future use on this team. Whether as a trade bait or a building block is yet to be determined. I’m a big fan of Curry because I love going inside. I think the boards and defense is campable! One more scorer and this team is set for a long time. And hey! Maybe a move or two and they can sneak into the playoffs this year!
GM: The one word that comes to mind when I hear the name Dan Basone is ‘mensch.’ What a guy. Probably has the coolest job editing videos for YES Network. Seems like a pretty good life, my man! As far as BBS goes, Dan keeps things chilled and has an uncanny ability to defuse dramatic situations. Good guy and good for the league!
Sacramento Kings
GM: Ashes
Team: I think everything I’m about to say is pretty obvious. The Kings are good, if not great. Kobe-Nash is easily the most fun 1-2 punch in the league. Those two combine for 61.6. Like how? How did this happen!?! While most teams either have a really good front court or a really good back court, the Kings have pretty decent every court! Okur, Reid, Foster, and Battie aren’t putting up showy stats, but they all shoot efficiently, rebound reasonably well, and get more steals than you’d realize! Really, really good team. #2 in ppg, #4 in FG%, #3 in FT%, #6 in 3PT%, and oh yeah #1 in SPG to boot.
GM: Ashes is one of my favorite GMs on the boards. Shit talker, but not annoying. Funny, but doesn’t have to be a dick to be funny. And oh yeah pretty good GM! Listen we can debate Crawford for Nash all day, every day, but there’s no denying that the Kings came out on top in that. Nash is amazing. Ashes won that one.
Seattle Supersonics
GM: 13rock
Team: The Sonics are a playoff team!? They are (as of writing this!)!! Seattle is the midst of a tank, but find themselves squarely inside the playoff bubble. One LARGE reason is the emergence of Jim McIvaine as a defensive stud down low. The big man is averaging 11/8/2.8 early on and looks like a sure bet to be worth a 1st round pick heading into the deadline. The Sonics also have some quality youth in Tyson Chandler and Paul Pierce. And although Andre Miller has often been the center of a lot of debate in the league, the game manager has reduced his topg by .6 year over year. That’s good!
GM: I’ll be honest I don’t know much about 13rock! What I do know is that he is consistent at posting team updates in the sim threads (which I love! Keeps me updated on all of the teams in the league without looking through each roster!) and posts trade blocks routinely. He’s been a really great addition so far!
