2001-02 Trade Frenzy Preview
With new sims coming everyday, and with Spencer maintaining this unbelievable pace, the annual TRADE FRENZY is just a few days away. Let’s take a look at what every team should be doing. Let’s see some real deals this season! Not just some fake shit.
We’ll take a look at every team that is still in the playoff hunt or has some chance at making the playoffs.
Eastern Conference:
1. Nets (20-5)
Where do they stand? At the top of the world. The Nets have by far the best team in the league and it will take a monumental upset to stop the Nets from making the finals.
What should they do? Upgrades at the margins, particular at SF. Mike Miller is bad. A deal for a Byron Russell (Hornets) could be a nice pickup near the deadline.
2. Toronto Raptors (15-10)
Where do they stand? In the middle. This team has had success so far but it’s overachieving. Expect the Raptors to come back to earth. Still, Game has made some nice deals at the margins.
What should they do? Lose? I don’t know here. The Raptors have had some exciting success to start the year but I don’t see a clear path to contention. I might see what the market is like for LaFrentz or Bradley.
3. Miami Heat (19-6)
Where do they stand? True contenders. The Heat are well-built and have a reasonable window since both Ricky and T-Mac are young.
What should they do? Explore the potential for blockbusters. If the Heat could trade one of their wings for an equally talented frontcourt player or Point Guard, they would be dangerous. The league is deep at SG/SF – not so at other positions.
4. Cleveland Cavaliers (15-10)
Where do they stand? Struggling, but talented. The Cavs have the talent of a 60-win team and could easily win the East with some luck on their side.
What should they do? Upgrade the depth. This team has a ton of talent but has not developed a lot of chemistry. The Cavs could package a future 1st for some frontcourt depth. Maybe Adonal Foyle and Etan Thomas?
5. Washington Wizards (12-8)
Where do they stand? In the middle. Like the Raptors, This team has had success so far but it’s overachieving. The Wizards don’t care…they are just grooming the young core.
What should they do? Chill. This team is playing the long game and I don’t think JAH has his eyes set at contending this season. I’m not sure the Wizards are setup to make any real frenzy moves.
6. New York Knicks (11-10)
Where do they stand? In the middle. It’s Jamal Crawford and role players right now. Without much rebounding or a secondary scorer, it’s hard to see the Knicks winning more than 45-50 games.
What should they do? Trade the Boston and/or Chicago 1st round picks. The Knicks are one of the few playoff teams with surplus 1st round picks and need to insure against missing the playoffs. If the Knicks could get frontcourt help or a scoring jolt, that could help.
7. Detroit Pistons (13-12)
Where do they stand? Heavily reliant on Chris Webber’s health. The Pistons are the 4th or 5th best team in the East when he plays and poop when he’s hurt.
What should they do? Find a 3rd scorer. This would be a reasonable option for a player like Antawn Jamison. Two future Pistons picks and some other assets? Throw him in an inside offense with Webber and cook.
8. Boston Celtics (11-12)
Where do they stand? Forever regretting a missed opportunity. I still can’t believe the Celtics didn’t jump on the chance to land Alonzo Mourning. This team is now on the fringe of the playoffs.
What should they do? Trade the Hornets pick for frontcourt help. This man is hurt, but I still think it would be an interesting long-term move: what about Shawn Marion for the Hornets pick and two Celtics futures? That might be enticing enough for the Rockets and give the Celtics a long-term defensive and rebounding ace next to AI.
9. Orlando Magic (13-15)
Where do they stand? Hanging in there. Antoine Walker has improbably turned into an impact player and Joe Johnson was an excellent pick. Still: this team has no business near the playoffs.
What should they do? Trade for the most turnover prone PG in the league and tank. Getting to 7-8 in the lotto and having decent lotto odds will be critical.
10. Chicago Bulls (9-12)
Where do they stand? Experiencing FBB’s karmic forces. The Bulls have almost the same point differential they had last year, but are no pace for over 20 fewer wins. This is an average team with a solid foundation but not a ton of star power.
What should they do? Pick a direction. Everyone knows this middle is the worst place to be and that is where the Bulls exist. Play/Insane could trade Moiso back for their pick, trade Camby and/or Finley for awesome rebuilding packages and set themselves up for good stuff in the future. Or they could trade some future picks, attach them to Courtney Alexander and try to land a star.
11. New Orleans Hornets (11-15)
Where do they stand? Hanging on for dear life. The Hornets traded Zo but do not own their 1st round pick so we are considering them in the playoff picture here.
What should they do? Don’t worry about your record. It’s a sunk cost. The Celtics will benefit. Whatever. Trade your guys picks and value even if it means fewer wins. It’s not a big deal.
Western Conference
1. Los Angeles Clippers (21-8)
Where do they stand? Building a statue for Tim Duncan, already. It doesn’t matter if you whiff on a few moves or don’t have a Point Guard, The Big Fundamental is that good.
What should they do? Find a competent Point Guard. Bang on doors. Do anything. Convince Steve Kerr to come out of retirement. Sam Cassell would be a fine target.
2. Utah Jazz (17-6)
Where do they stand? Ready to repeat. The Nets will be a much tougher out this time around, but the Jazz are really good and will have another shot at this thing.
What should they do? Trade Bobby Jackson. He’s a champion! He should have value! Get an upgrade elsewhere, write 3 articles, and AC Sarunas! That is a good use of resources.
3. Sacramento Kings (20-7)
Where do they stand? On the shoulders of two giants. Nash and Kobe are so good, nothing else matters.
What should they do? Reconsider the notion of packaging all of their C+ assets together. You don’t need a 3rd star. Kobe and Nash are that good. Instead, trade Artest for an upgrade by himself. Then Okur to someone else. Then a 1st to someone else. Build your depth and team around the two stars. That’s all the team needs.
4. Denver Nuggets (17-10)
Where do they stand? Succeeding in spite of age! This is a good team that will be a tough out in the playoffs but don’t really have any appetizing assets outside of Shaq.
What should they do? Convert Antonio McDyess to SG full-time and make sure the league doesn’t hear anything about this. Kidding. The Nuggets really have nothing to trade after using the 04 1st on Mikki Moore. Maybe consider trading McDyess for an actual wing? Patrick Ewing does well in the minutes he players.
5. Memphis Grizzlies (14-9)
Where do they stand? In a place to move - up or down. The Grizzlies have the most appetizing roster of all of the non "surefire" contenders and have the ability to pull off any deal they want. Erbes has a lot of good young players and fun depth.
What should they do? Target Jason Kidd. The Grizzlies don't have a longtime answer at Point Guard and Kidd could be a good fit. A package of Big Z + NVE + Aaron Mckie might be enough to move the needle for the Mavericks, who desperately need a big.
6. Golden State Warriors (12-11)
Where do they stand? Winning, but trying to lose. Dirk and Billups are just too good.
What should they do? Get better at tanking. Start Billups at SG and find a turnover prone PG. Play Dirk at Center. Do whatever it takes. There aren’t many other assets on this team so picking high in the lottery is vital
7. Minnesota Timberwolves (11-11)
Where do they stand? Arduously plowing through this season. It’s been a bit of a tough-go for the Wolves but they have attempted to bring the chemistry together. This team needs an upgrade at Center in a big way and a more balanced lineup.
What should they do? Man, I’m not sure. I did not like the Stackhouse deal or like Stackhouse at all. I would try to TRADE VINCE (who is awesome) for a godfather package and try to mix things up. The current iteration of the roster is in purgatory.
8. Seattle Supersonics (12-13)
Where do they stand? Speaking of which….in purgatory. I think they are trying to win? I’m not sure? They are in fine shape. Pierce and Chandler are pretty good. Millers is OK. But I don’t know what the point of this team is right now.
What should they do? Trade Jim McIlvaine. This team isn’t going anything this year and a million teams need Centers. He could fetch a 1st round pick, an asset that will help down the line.
9. Dallas Mavericks (13-14)
Where do they stand? An agent of chaos. The Mavs may be the 9th seed but have an easy path towards # 3 in the West if they so choose.
What should they do? Rethink the desire to trade Jason Kidd. He’s a huge comparative advantage with his defense and rebounding. You can build a team with him @ PG. Instead, trade Tony Parker. He’s the more valuable player and will be a better player, but he should fetch Habes the big he needs to get to the next level.
San Antonio Spurs (10-12)
Where do they stand? High on life! The Spurs had a terrible 1st season, then signed Manu, drafted Z-Bo and traded for Mourning. The Spurs are about the rise up the standings.
What should they do? Trade for Eddie House. I’m kidding. But this team does need a Point Guard. Some depth could help, too.
10. Portland Trailblazers (10-13)
Where do they stand? Rebuilding! Team is in good shape. Eddie Curry makes us all feel silly. Go DB!
What should they do? Trade Cliffy Poo for 3 2nds, pickup your Frenzy RC and call it a day.
11. Los Angeles Lakers (8-13)
Where do they stand? Making progress. Team has gotten off to a slow start but is in a good position long-term.
What should they do? Don’t force it. You don’t have your pick, but who cares? All of your guys are young and will get better. Trade that Net 1st (# 29) for a player like Cliff Robinson (above!) to get some good minutes out of some depth dudes.
