Hi friends, were you aware there have been over 70 articles written by BBS2020 GMs and weightlist folks in the span of 1.5 seasons? Only in a BBS league is that not surprising. In the spirit of something different (I'm sure there are several mock lottos and frenzy reviews in the hours and days to come) I thought I would try my hand at matching current GMs to the gaming console they remind me of. Thank you for your time on this beautiful Sunday!
Boston Celtics/brianh - OG Xbox
The original Xbox was as American as apple pie. An oversized controller that turned Japanese consumers sour early before the console hit the market there along with a launch campaign featuring wrestling superstar THE ROCK. The picture of Brianh in shades on a motorcycle reminds me of a slice of American life as well. While the OG xbox wasnt a smash hit with consumers it still has fans much like brian hasn't set the world on fire but has made some good moves.
Can u smell it?
Miami Heat/kobe - Ps3
The PS3 launched at an unapologetic $600, but that price tag carried with it the meat of essentially the guts a ps2 along with a blu-ray player. The ps3 was loud and proud about what they had to offer, even if people didnt like it. A lot of the same can be said about kobe, not everyone here is a fan of him but over time those who don't see what he brings and the have to respect his GMing skills.
New Jersey Nets/greeme - Atari 2600/7200
Why do I get the feeling greeme has one of these bad boys plugged up in a basement with a shag carpet and wood paneled walls? IDK. Either way both the Atari and greeme are classics and you have to respect their place in the video game pantheon/GMs. Not the most exciting but always delivers.
New York Knicks/skillz - Xbox 360
A GM with a Z taking the place of S has to be compared to the 360! The 360 was at the forefront of modern gaming and broadened the horizons of online multiplayer. Skillz did the same running SLOR and is trying to be a revolutionary in the league with Jamal Crawford being the top dog on a contending team.
Orlando Magic/break - Panasonic 3DO
I'm not sure what the Panasonic 3DO was trying to accomplish..an $800 multimedia console that really didn't have a place in the market when it came out in the early 90s...much like I'm not sure break has a grasp on the league yet. But hey, Gex on the 3DO was a pretty good game.
WTF
Philadelphia 76ers/steve - Nintendo Switch
Our first current gen console!! I had to think for a minute before I could come up with any comparison that even made a modicum of sense. People were skeptical of the switch when it came out, right after the flop of the WiiU, but look at it now. Over 50 million units sold in 3+ years, animal crossing selling 13 million units in 6 weeks. What's the comparison here? Well Steve has good young players in Jamison and Marbury and a possible top 3 pick, the future is bright for them just like the switch!
Washington Wizards/jah - Nintendo 64
Jah is always present in leagues and is someone that most everyone is fond of, even if he is never at the top of everyone's list. Similar to jah, the n64 had a great selection of first party games most people like along with some solid racing games. Oh yeah, conkers bad fur day was a gem as well.
Atlanta Hawks/styro - NES
Not much to say here. Styro is a classic GM that most people are a fan of. The NES is a classic gaming console that almost everyone can find some sort of enjoyment out of.
New Orleans Hornets/pig - PS Vita
I like pig, always been one of my top BBSers even if he doesn't know it! I also feel like pig is a GM here that everyone would like if they met him in person, the same way I feel most people would get enjoyment out of the vita if they just picked it up.
Chicago Bulls - insane/play - sega genesis+sega cd
A classic combo, or is it? Things looked great the first season but have hit a rough patch in season 2 (but are they figuring it out in the second half of the season). The genesis was a 16 bit powerhouse and the sega cd had some great titles (when they werent pushing fmv junk) much like these are two GMs that are great individually but can be combined for great results!
Cleveland Cavaliers/svedda - Sega Saturn
Hey! This guy gets compared to my favorite gaming console of all time. I hope you realize the significance of this HONOR. Ive been in leagues with svedda for 13+ years and he's one of my favorite ppl. Much like the saturn I feel his first years/time in BBS were misunderstood and as he and leagues in general have matured he has come to be appreciated by more than a few fellow GMs. That is similar to the Saturn, as it was much maligned while on the market but has found its place with gamers (just check the price on the good games...panzer dragoon saga over $900!)
Check out their weird video commercials they did
Detroit Pistons/galo - Sega Dreamcast
Dont have a lot to say. I like the dreamcast, and I like galo. Hes a chill dude. NBA showtime was a fantastic game on dreamcast. Lot of good arcade ports too!
Indiana Pacers/sargo - Nintendo Wii
I was sort of indifferent on Sargo during the first few leagues I saw him in (looong time ago) but he grew on me and I come to value him as a sim league pal and fellow GM. I felt the same way about the Wii when I first saw it, like wtf is that? A TV remote or a game controller? However as many other people figured out after getting their hands on it there's a lot to love with the Wii. I still have it hooked up to my tv as of this day!
Milwaukee Bucks/chipper - Intellivison
Why are they making a new Intellivision console? Why does Tommy Tallarico think this is a good idea? I don't think this will have a good result...much like bringing chipper back after initially replacing him. The shard and sheed trades look pretty oof so far and the only saving grace is last year didn't count towards CY.
Toronto Raptors/game - Gamecube
Diego has done a nice job so far, but his next few moves may determine if we view his trajectory as an overwhelming success (the Wii) or a mistake when the groundwork had been laid previously (WiiU)
