To stop somebody by the leg, you need to break the knee, dislocate the pelvis crack a bone. That’s honestly about a 1-2 inch target range.

you're trained to fire for center mass because one, it's the biggest target, i dunno how accurate you think police/military are in an actual situation, but it's incredibly inaccurate, and two, because their goal is to stop the person

you have zero guarantee a shot to the leg or arm (gl with shooting someone's arm mid stab with someone right next to them) is going to stop someone, with the adrenaline they may even power through it without hesitation

as for firing 5 shots, yeah it seems excessive, they fire until the target is neutralized, can or should that be changed, possibly

but for my "military" perspective, I wouldn't have shot because I wouldn't have been able to guarantee no one else got hit by my bullets, the other girl was way too close in my opinion

the problem with a situation like this is she had clear lethal capability and intent there, how can you guarantee a non-lethal option will stop her? people have been known to shrug off tasers, I personally am unaffected by pepper/oc spray/mace whatever. if you choose to go non-lethal, and the other girl is stabbed in the throat and dies, what then? at least you tried?

was he actively already engaging swinging his machete at someone the same time the officers arrive at the scene? I tried to look what you were referencing, only found two videos from 2019 and neither comes anything close to this situation. both don't seem to have a victim actively being attacked. 

People may disagree with me on this but if it was the girl was attacking the officer with the knife, I don't believe he should shoot. in the interest of protecting a civilian life however, he needs to protect with a certainty.

Someone is attacking me with a knife I am defending myself anyway I can.  I will deal about potential repercussions on the backhand, but I least can deal with them and are not dead at that point.
