1. Finals came down to the top seeds in each conference. Is this what you expected and if not then who?
Brophdog88 - Yeah, moreso the Nuggets, but the Heat have been consistently good and have a stout lineup with stars all around (well, did). The bulls were great, but the top end talent the Heat had is tough to overcome. In the West, there was a lot of depth, so Denver being 60-22 sets them apart, Cousy is just incredible, so its no surprise they were the West rep, they won the West by 8 games, woulda been a surprise to not be.
hf - I thought Bulls would come out the east and wanted to come out the west myself. But I thought the jazz had a great team and would pull it out. Congrats Kobe! And cc for his run
Braz - I really expected the bulls to go on a run after the way they mopped the court with us. I also expected Habes with Mack to make the finals but Denver seemed to be on a mission until they saw Miami.
Stevie B - I mean, yeah? I thought the Bulls had a real chance, but I think the Heat and the Nuggets were the favorites going in based off the regular season alone. There was a ton of parity this season, but I feel like those 2 teams were a cut above. The Jazz and the Bulls had a fighter’s chance, but that was probably it.
2. How much of winning a title is luck and how much is skill?
Brophdog88 - 25/75, 75% of it is being able to put the team in place thats good enough to win, but sometimes shit happens, i.e. the Ellison injury, and sometimes you just dont have the best matchups in the playoffs. It might bounce around a bit more with the way league ratings are, more good players means swingier performances I feel like, but in generally, its still a lot of skill to put together a team good enough to get there.
hf - 75% skill 25% luck.
You need to build a good team to even hVe a shot. Rarely do we have a miracle run where a great team doesn’t win. I would say the Celtics with Livingston is the only lucky championship to date
Braz - This is ten percent luck
Twenty percent skill
Fifteen percent concentrated power of will
Five percent pleasure
Fifty percent pain
And a hundred percent reason to remember the name
Stevie B - I think there’s certainly luck involved, but the argument that Kobe is the luckiest GM or some shit is just flat out idiotic. He’s on the verge of winning his 4th title this version. Luck? That’s just an asinine comment by whoever is making it. I could see people thinking you could be lucky with one title because they are not having great success overall typically…I mean you can look at Brian and almost know he will never sniff a title again.
3. After the Nets trades, where do they stand? What should be the next plan of attack?
Brophdog88 - I mean, the East is weak but, uhh, a lot depends on FA, they could use a nice steal, and there are some players out there Marty could throw money at and guarantee he gets somebody. Team needs scoring, so that would be the target.
hf - They need some bigs and another scorer. Also need a point guard. Think they need to be patient, and keep making offers.
Braz - If you look at what hes got he is actually building a solid team that will play well together. Last year Nanz gave up pick 6 for 2 wings. This year Marty gives up pick 6 for 2 bigs, one whos really a SF. I think the wings are easier for find. Marty aquired coleman and will likely bring back Lamelo. A line up of Brown Domingo Jack SG (likely Cam) and Ball is already s pretty good team. I assume he will fill that out further and have Domingo and Ernie come off the bench. Hell Ernie can starrt SG making Cam back up 1/2. Could be a lot worse. We saw a lot worse from the same team 5 seasons ago.
Stevie B - I have no idea where Marty is to be honest. I’m not sure what he has left, but it seems like it’s limited. I really don’t know how he will get through, but he has made it before. Is this his 4th CY? Hard to keep count of.
4. Which team is in the toughest situation going forward?
Brophdog88 - Nets, CY sucks and were hamstrung by a lack of picks, if they can get through this year, they have to figure out how to recover back and reset.
hf - Nets are definitely in a rough situation in their cy but I think Marty got this. Don’t like the Pistons situation either. Feel like I’ve been saying that a while. Celtics need to do something to avoid the cy
Braz - I really dont think too many teams are in deep holes. A team coming up on CY with busted prospects could be in trouble but likely will just need to use the draft capitol and cap to get players. Maybe ill say Memphis. They have the suggs contact, they have no picks of thier own and just moved stud wing coleman and are seeking to move holloway. The rug could be pulled out from under them real quick.
Stevie B - Nets are clearly the roughest, but I think the next toughest situation is the Spurs. Look at that roster! 3 aging superstars, and they don’t have their pick until 2039? Royal also didn’t reset this season which would’ve been big for him. Really brutal situation.
5. Looking at the draft, Jones is a very interesting player. How would you camp him and what do you expect his rookie numbers to be?
Brophdog88 - From the sounds of it, there isnt much to camp, I would guess inside, midrange, handles, quicks, perimeter D are all uncampable, so yeah, you give him a three point shot and see if it grows to a 45 or so, then steals, and probably strength? Dont want him fouling out too much you know.
hf - Would just wait to see how he sims tbh but he looks like the best version of Shaun Livingston. 20/10 2 steals 1 block
Braz - Well alot of things are already elite so I think id confirm those first and then try to help impact other areas. Part of me would want to waste +8 on his 3 hoping it gets there in a few yrs but if its currently at like 10 thats useless.
Lets go with
1. Jumper
2. Inside
3. handles
Assuming all those are capped
4. steals
5. blocks
6. Strength
7. Whatever
Maybe he is like a preview of big O. I could see good volume and high fg%. Maybe as a rookie 20 point 7-8 rebound PG shooting 50% with 3 stocks to 1 TO. No idea about his passing though.
Stevie B - I would still camp all of the areas that said he was elite first just in case they aren’t over 85 just yet. After that, I’d camp his strength and rebounding, but what else is left? You almost might still have to camp his 3-ball just because there is literally not much left.
6. Is this the weakest out of the retro drafts thus far?
Brophdog88 - Tough to say, it felt real weak, I feel like its more stable at the back end of the lotto, but there just werent as many players you could see going big. Thats a struggle, depth isnt really the goal I feel, but thats what I had to start looking at. The players are all good, but flawed it feels like, Stokes maybe less so since you kinda like no scoring in a big, but need to see Elite blocks. Just doesn't feel like there are many of those. Then again, the more perimeter oriented the league is, the fewer blocks anyway.
hf - Nope. We got an elite player and an elite big. There’s also a late steal in this draft.
Braz - I immediately regretted trading for 6 after looking deeper into the class but im sure i will find some gems or someone else will rather.
Stevie B - Feels that way? I don’t know. When I’m not in the draft, I don’t pay as attention to it as I probably should.
7. Some great players have been on the market. Peat, Mikan, Barksdale for example. Which great player is the most likely to move and where is he going?
Brophdog88 - Id guess Barksdale, just because the CY has been reset and so he can start looking to retool and go for longevity.
hf - I would say one of the Jazz guys will go. Mack, maybe Wanzer.
Braz - Weird point in the league where so many teams are looking to move studs, but lets be honest what youth is available that would be worth trading for one of these said studs? This leads to those guys not getting moved or gms complaining the offers arent there. Teams with top 7 picks arent as pressed to win, except marty who traded his pick already. Can I see whoever gets top 3 moving one of those guys for Peak Mikan and Barks? prob not unless that team wanted to compete quickly which doesnt seem the case.
Stevie B - Can tell you this, I won’t be moving Peat if things don’t heat up, and that’s fine with me. I love his production and I won’t sell him short. I could see Barksdale moving. Andrew moves in slow motion so we might not see him deal Mikan until the summer of 2022.
8. After the DET/MEM deal, should we tighten up on moving out of roster picks or loosen up on it?
Galo - I mean Spence has been adamant about the 3 year window and don't think he wants to extend past it so tighten up those cheeks I guess.
Brophdog88 - Im fine with it as is, is that an answer? I get why its the way it is, not a rule Im used to, but letting teams be gutted by somebody in their CY then bail is not a great idea. Im not sure how much the CY needs to be around, hard enough getting GM's generally, but there needs to be some impetus to not tank forever.
hf - I think we should stop trying to circumvent the rules. No changes need to be made, as the rules have worked.
Braz - I dont think we need to over complicate stuff. Leave it and just dont do that stuff.
Stevie B - Tighten up. That was honestly fucking pitiful how Spence handled it, but whatever. Clear work around, and because it’s not directly in the rule book, we are going to allow it? Brutal decision, and really just asinine to think we have 2 GMs that thought that was okay.
9. What’s your plan for this offseason?
Brophdog88 - I really would like to gather my main pieces, or at least one, because I need to start winning soon, as in, next year. West is pretty brutal though so it cant be a half assed go for it. Really hope a couple of the young players get better and I can grab a big or two to block and rebound.
hf - Bring back a similar squad to last year and see where it takes us. Want to win 55 hopefully.
Braz - Lets see if 6 jumps. will change everything.
Stevie B - Most likely will go in with the team I finished up with which is fine. Hoping for more development out of Monk. I really like Hagan, but this is a big TC for him. I need him to become a superstar for me to continue having a chance at this thing. We still won with him, but he needs to get to another level obviously.
10. Switch teams with someone in your division. Why that team?
Brophdog88 - Denver, he has Cousy, Cousy is great.
hf - All the teams in my division are ass and I wouldn’t change with them even if they had Michael Jeffrey Jordan.
Braz - Bulls- Love plays roster but would miss cloud.
Stevie B - Eh. Maybe the Suns or the Lakers? The Suns and Lakers have some interesting and fun pieces where you can possibly either compete or just tear it down. I’m the Lakers in my other league so I have appreciation for that franchise.
