You won't be able to win every trade by a large enough margin to build a 0 weakness team It isn't about building a team with the most trade value or talent Huh? The teams with the most talent almost always win. I hope you aren't going to cherry pick some outliers...

I'm saying that to build a team you have to pick your spots. Get some cheap backups, even if they aren't stars. Figure out how to hide weaknesses etc

Look at the champions page. Those winners were almost always the most talented. The only suspect win in recently history was the Suns

My point was hiding weaknesses isn't that simple. There isn't always a trade that can be made to close whatever gap(s) you may have. So yes, acquiring the best talent possible and trying your hand with that is a viable strategy.

The alternative is waiting for a string of drafts with elite talent, tanking those years and hope you are drafting superstars Top 3. That's hard. Too much luck involved

I think I don't get what we are arguing here then lol When I build a team I generally try to want to keep it together for a bunch of years. I value cheap contracts more than most. Depth also. Guys that can do different things to help in the playoffs

But you can only have a few max guys at one time if you want to have good depth People tend to get the best players they can and get into cap trouble

The "we'll figure out cap later" approach works

I think all of us recognize the importance of cap management but sometimes getting the best talent possible is worth the cap issue. The "we'll figure out cap later" approach works That is why a lot of teams only have 2-3 yr windows The slow, turnstile of youth style doesn't always result in wins either though. You might win more regular season games over a longer period of time, but that 3 yr window team might have got a title out of it while the slow build guy got nothing

For the record, I have a lot of respect for GMs that are legitimately in the mix year in and year out. That's hard to do.
