Article: BBS’s 75 Most Valuable Players (2003-04)
It’s that time of the year again. New draft, new TC, new world. The BBS value landscape changes every sim, but every season we like to take a beat and see where all of our players fall.
Let’s get to it. As always, player value involves production, ratings, contract status, age, camp status, player perception and alike.
As a reminder, I ranked your players much lower than they should be ranked and it is because I have a personal vendetta against you.
Okay, let’s get to it.
Tier 5 (75-54):
A mix: a) very old players who used to be elite but no longer carry the same value because of their age, b) interesting prospects who are not sure things, C) good players in their respective prime’s who can start on contending teams but are not the key to a title team’s success.
Some thoughts: I imagine the players in the 60-54 range will raise some eyebrows, as many of these guys appeared a lot higher on this list last year. That’s what newly-minted max contracts will do to you. Grant Hill is good (not great) and now on a 6-year max. Paul Pierce, Antawn Jamison and Antoine Walker have revealed themselves to be provocative flaws – nicely rated players with big holes in their games. Elton Brand underwhelms everywhere he goes. Finley, Miller and Moiso are all good but a little overpaid. Some of the guys closer to 65-75 have nice futures and are good role players.

Tier 4 (53-36):
Enticing young players (cut-off: age 25) who have the potential to rise on this list in the future. These guys are either flawed, not fully formed, or haven’t reached their respective peaks yet.
Some thoughts: So many players on this list are interchangeable. A lot of this comes down to position and DC, as players in better situations will tend to look sexier than those who do not benefit from inflated statistics and alike. All of these guys are very intriguing for a variety of different reasons. The player I struggled the most with was Morlende – he’s clearly limited with his “5” three-point shooting, but the rest of his game is so intriguing I would take him over a lot of guys who have a more established pedigree. I continue to think Carmelo is pretty bad.

Tier 3 (35-24):
Some thoughts: Not a ton differentiates the worst of these guys from the best players in Tier 5 (is Webber that much better than Brand, for instance?), but most of these guys are phenomenal building blocks who can stabilize a team. Mourning would be much higher, but his contract is so onerous I considered moving him even farther back. Marion is super polarizing. Tough to tell if he’s a top-20 player or top-80 player. Need to see him on a good team. Houston and Big Dog come in almost exactly where they were rated last season.

Tier 2 (23-13)
Really good players who can function as your best player but are ideally suited as # 2’s on the best, best teams. Some of these guys are # 1s but are moved from tier 1 because of positional scarcity or age. Others are younger and project to be come Tier 1 guys soon.
Some thoughts: The Power Forward trio of Zach Randolph, Gerald Wallace and Chris Bosh all look quite interesting. Will any of the three develop into tier 1 guys? Probably not, but their rookie contracts vault them above the Tier 3 players. Ray Ray and KVH are studs who can be viable # 1 options on title teams. Billups and Parker are the next best PG’s in a Point Guard starved league, and both are in their primes. Shaq is a bipolar player but still valuable on the right team. DD and Yao are likely to vault into Tier 1 in the future.

Tier 1 (12-1)
The best players in the league, period.
Some thoughts: Wouldn’t you love to have any of these guys? Me too, and I have already had 5 of them! I struggled with where to place Wade and LeBron, but I ultimately settled on # 1 and # 2. This may be a bit of a reach, but given the advantages they have that no one else in the league enjoys (ability to develop & milk rebounds at SG/SF while being able to start at PG), and their rookie contracts, I think it is fair. Duncan and Kobe is a toss-up at this point. I’d rather build around the wing in an outside offense. The rest of the guys are absolutely awesome but maybe not transcendent. Dirk has a chance of getting there if his defense and rebounding keep developing this way. All of these guys are awesome!
