Red’s early season 03 Rookie review
Well here we are 35 days into the season and time to look at the early results of the 03 draft class. The RPEF has had a major update in that the original formula adjusted for playing time to see how people looked / would look if playing time was equal. This caused microwave popcorn inflation on players that didn’t start and so that portion of the formula has been scrapped.
The leaner meaner RPEF should be more accurate at saying who is the best going forward. Ofc we still have true EFT%, PpS, and BihPs for those that like to see how effective their guys are at scoring, cause we all know, whichever team scores the most, at the end of the day, wins the game.
The Career Magliorean Line is 13.726
Well let’s get to the pretty numbers, at the day 35 mark Bosh is coming out on top over James, and Josh looking to be the steal of the draft. Josh has a high EFT, BihP and is grabbing 8 boards a game, while averaging 18 Ppg.
Sorted by RPEF
Sorted by BihP
Of the top 4 picks, Bosh is the only one to not have a negative Stocks / TO rate.
Now since everyone loves stocks, this is the 03 rookie class rated by Stocks / TO value. We all know stocks isn’t everything, but they are nice to have.

Now no Rookie review is complete without the where are they now, and we have the top guys from 01 and 02. The Heat continue to look like they stole the best rookie to date in a trade when they got Zach, that was the 7th pick overall by the Spurs in 01. 30+ ppg players are rare, but the Lakers got one as the 2nd pick of the 01 draft at PG and then traded him, and now he is scoring at will in Indiana. Scary that he still looks like he could get better.
So the crème de la crème, and more
Then we get to the Bench players and those that it wont be long before they are FA’s and out of the league, unless they somehow find a way to evolve.
Looking forward to the end of the season when we do this all over again and see where everyone ends up after a full season of play for the rooks and also to see if any of the 01-02 guys below an 18 RPEF end up better than they are now.
Till the Playoffs start, this is Red signing off. PEACE
Points per shot is just that, total points from FGs and 3pointers divided by FGA. Ball in players hand is the same but it also looks at FT’s too, basically it comes down to, every time a person tries to score, this is their average per attempt. The guys that have the highest BihP are the guys you want to have the ball in one position game with time running out. I looked at the PER formula by John Hollinger, and realized while I would not mind programming it, doing it in excel would blow chunks. So I looked at combining a basic version of his idea with the outdated ( (ppg+R+A+B+S-TO) to come up with a rating that not only rewarded a good EFT, but also penalized people from missing fee points. I’m sure Shaq hates this formula that I developed. While it really hurt his points portion of the formula, his nonstop rebounding and the best assist per game rate of any of the Centers has him as one of the best Centers in the game. Now to validate the formula I looked at historical data of some of the best players to ever play the game and then further tweaked the formula to reward steals a tad more than blocks as a block doesn’t automatically cause a turnover. At no point was the PEF copied or tweaked, just a few ideas about what he has done. That said assists are going even more down in value that they have now.
