Red’s PEF put to the test.
So last year I debut a rating formula for comparing players and reflecting back on the conversation of who was the GOAT, decided to see how the Red’s Player Evaluation Formula would look if we looked at some all-time greats. In setting this up, had to manually input the stats as basketball reference page is ofc nowhere like the player pages of FBB. Since I created the spreadsheet for it, I really didn’t feel like reprogramming all the hidden cell calculations for a one-time paper. I wanted to include Bill Russell, and he will be shown for fun, but Steals, Blocked Shots, and Turnovers were not official NBA stats from back then. This led to a rabbit hole of articles that were quite enjoyable to read talking about why it is probable he averaged 7-9 block shots a game for his career. These articles also talked about Wilt Chamberlain and that even as impressive as Russell’s block avg was, Wilt would have had more, a lot more, 10-12 a game average for his career. What was covered was Wilt would go after everything and smash them into the stands where Russell was far more strategic and would either tip them to teammates or deflect them up to turn them into a rebound like scenario. The Laker coach at the time once complained about this to Wilt since Wilt loved sending his blocks into the crowd, to which he replied “The Celtics are coached to recover blocks” OUCH talk about laying a verbal smackdown on the couch. Since we all know you aren’t here to read about ancient history, lets get to the meat of what we are doing here, and meet our candidates. KG and Duncan had to show up after the conversation about them. Melo, was brought in to represent a certain puppy dawg, the Admiral, Bron, Kobe, Steph, Shaq, Durrant, and Harden too. To represent some of the older greats the likes of Magic, Dr J and Bird were also included. Doing this allowed me to see the formula was a bit too Bigs centric, as a couple shot blockers that will be talked about in the second half showed, but one thing kept showing up, and that was a consistency of one player (besides the way old guy that will be in the second half). As such RPEF was modified. The biggest surprise was how low in the chart Kobe was, as I could not find anything about clutch shots, as I think that was what made Kobe better than most. What hurt Kobe the most is part of the factors that go into the scoring portion of the formula, as his EFT% of the modern-day players, only Melo has a worse. The other thing I ended up doing was increasing steals value over blocked shots by a little, as a steal is always a TO, and a block is not. I can tell by now that you are all wondering where is the rankings?!?!?!
I was amazed by how much Jordan beat everyone else using the RPEF Duncan had been ahead of KG until I upped Steals to be slightly more important, but as everyone can see, KG was the better man. Bron, Durrant, Steph, and Harden are going to be thee most coveted draftees coming up if the RPEF is right. The Admiral coming in Where he did was also a surprise to me, but then again there are very few players with his talent.
Now for the fun, was Kareem potentially one of the GOATs that no one ever mentioned? Russell’s insane rebound numbers powered him to his ranking, and from what I read I gave him too low a steal pg rate and the TO was strictly highest number I had for any of the players I had initially added for review. By all accounts he did not turn the ball over much, had his score would undoubtedly be higher had all the stats been tracked back then.
MJ’s all-around stats allowed him to literally leap off the page, as the hands down GOAT of the modern era. While Bron has the nickname the King, his Airness is is the one true royal. Shout out to my man Bird for coming in so high on the list! I really wish I had kept all the tabs open that I used for reference when digging into some of this information, as on top of being a fun read and, when I found out that scoring actually went down in the NBA during the time period the 3 point line was closer, shocked the crap out of me. Had wanted to past the links in for those that might be bored at home and wanted to read some of the sources. As always, vote wisely, lest you end up on a blacklist!

Brian you’re a fantastic person but you got to incorporate this into OUR league...not the NBA. Like this would be cool if you did that. Who would’ve been the top 5 using this metric in our league last season...

And I have no earthly idea how you came up with this formula, too. Unless I missed it when I was skimming through

I guess I should have just put random quotes under players names, as that apparently is more basketball worthy than this
